WARNING!!! I was robbed at GUNPOINT during lunch on the patio with my girlfriend on January 20. We had been there for less than 5 minutes when a man with a bandana over his face approached me with a gun and asked for my watch, not our laptops or phones that were on the table or our wallets. There were others at tables nearby, but I was specifically targeted. The only person we interacted with was the server who had handed us menus.
Neither the owner (Luis Chaia) nor the staff acknowledged that anything happened. They were extremely unhelpful and unsympathetic, and WOULD NOT HELP US CALL THE POLICE so we had a friend call. While filling out the police report the owner said we LIED and that nothing happened. He refused to turn over video footage of the patio area where we were sitting.
I’ve spent 5 months in Tulum in the past year, love it here, and understand the risk of being a tourist. What was WRONG with this, however, was the owner’s utter lack of compassion and integrity, and his turning a blind eye to crime. ENTER AT...
Read moreStumbled onto this place yesterday near where I am staying in La Veleta. It was around 11am and pretty hot but still found a table on the patio where a nice breeze kept it from getting too hot. The servers are very friendly. I ordered mixed red berries with honey/yogurt/granola but after ordering the server returned to tell me they were out of that item. Servers should know which items are not available before the customer orders. The replacement was a variety of fruits all fresh and nicely presented. I also ordered a cinnamon roll..which surprisingly has a few blueberries in it. It was a little dense instead of fluffy but still good. I don't like that they include the 10 percent tip..not sure that is even legal. I am used to leaving 20 percent tips for hard working servers at restaurants but left it at 10 percent. I will go back when it is cooler and hopefully change my review from...
Read moreAfter a night out in Tulum, we got a late start to the day and decided on brunch at La Pebeta as it was nearby. The outdoor patio was a great spot for a midday meal, and the atmosphere was charming and inviting.
However, the service left a lot to be desired. A staff member casually dropped off menus, muttered, “English on the back,” and walked away. When our actual server arrived, she just stood there silently staring, waiting for us to order, definitely an odd experience.
As for the food, it was a mixed bag. The mini pancakes were the highlight, but my hash brown eggs were underwhelming, and the club sandwich was just average. The prices were reasonable for what we got, 749 MXN (about $37 USD) but if it were any more expensive, I’d have an issue.
Overall, I wouldn’t return, as there are much better brunch...
