Il Bacaro Tulum Trattoria Italiana — Restaurant in Quintana Roo

We ate here twice, the first time was fantastic, great service and great steak. Our second visit was the polar opposite, the service was appalling, its as if they didn’t care if we were there or not. First they brought the main before the starter so we returned it. Then the wrong main arrived, we returned it. Eventually the right meal arrived but it was sub-standard. Water didn’t arrive when asked. Surely when you order shrimp pasta in this town by the sea teaming with seafood you would expect decent shrimps and not chopped up pieces of shrimp! Overall the service was substandard and the food was not much better. We always leave a tip but in our 7 weeks touring Mexico this was our WORST experience of food and service. Ordered tuna tartar, one pasta dish and a pizza, all to share between two. It took at least 40 min for the first dish to arrive. Only after I complained the first time they acknowledged the lateness. Food quality is not great. I had high expectations after the reviews and recomendaciones from the hotel we were staying in but the food was mediocre at the most. Other minor issues like no AC (the restaurant is terraced like most restaurants in Tulum), no serving spoon for the pasta (until we asked for it), tips already added to the bill (hand written, they ask, though, whether you are happy with this before you pay…). After an exhausting day of Tulum ruins and snorkeling, it was fantastic to find this lovely trattoria!

A good server serves. A great server observes the guests and makes suggestions. Noticing we were quite hot, Ana suggested we move to a cooler part of the restaurant - Thank you, Ana!

Another server, Antonio Jesús, took our orders and made drinks. He recommended the coconut mojito, which was delicious.

The capaccio di manzo appetizer was fresh. My spinach ravioli with shrimp hit the spot. The rest of my party had the Bacaro pizza, lasagna, and shrimp gnocchi - everyone was impressed.

We finished the meal with a shot of grappa.
