This is a place where the locals go. So if that is your thing, this is your place. After eating all-inclusive-hotel food for a week, we wanted to experience the local culture and taste something more than cafeteria food. We were not disappointed. The tacos here are small by American comparison: two will make a snack, for a meal four may be more appropriate. But we were out for an after dinner snack, I got 2 tacos and a horchata for $5 USD. The tacos were awesome, especially with the hot sauce from the table dispenser. You can order take-out from the front desk, or go to the sit-down area in the back, we chose the latter and enjoyed it. That kept us covered from the rain but open enough for a breeze. It was a $10 USD taxi ride each way from our hotel, and was still worth it. All the food was delicious, it had real flavor. If you are concerned about them being too spicy, I found that to not be the case for me, and I could add hot sauce to get to my heat preference. Only some of the staff was fluent in English, but we were happy to get by with our broken limited Spanish and hand signals. Definitely a...
Read moreI'd driven past this spot on multiple occasions during my visits to Cozumel but was not inspired to stop until a chance conversation. Rene, a local recommended El Pique as one of his favorites and spoke highly of the soupas. The Consumae he said was made from the head of the pig and was so delicious. Additionally, the bean soups were also very good. It was not hard to locate as I was familiar with the location. I arrived just before they opened at 6pm but they allowed me to enter and have a seat. I strapped in my seat and prepared to take an amazing ride to Taco Town via culinary experience. I made a pig of myself, no offense to the pigs. I had the Chuletas (porkchop) and frijoles soupa. How delicious they were and so much to eat. The food was served with a saucer of diced onion, cilantro, lime and spices. El Pique is a must do when in Cozumel. The food is not expensive but oh so good. The staff is friendly and...
Read moreIn town for some R&R, local’s suggestions for Taqueria El Pique came up several times. Upon arriving (a couple minutes before 6pm), there were already people waiting (a good sign!). When the doors opened, I was presented with a gyro spit full of pastor amongst the rest of the kitchen. A short walk to the back area opens into a courtyard, with ample seating and the menu against the wall. Service was stellar and pricing was very cheap. Pastor tacos were on-point, some of the best I've ever had. We actually visited a second time this trip, specifically to try the chuleta con queso tacos, which in my opinion were also amazing. This is a definite must-try location...
