Overall a below average experience. Food was nice. Service was poor. Cats are a real nuisance.
Sofia (the owner) was rude to me upon paying. I had been taking pictures of the menu. When doing so she became aggressive because she didn’t want us to publicly share her menu. She raised her voice at us whereas it would have been much more professional for her to have asked us nicely not to have taken photos. We wouldn’t have had a problem with this. Her rudeness and finger pointing left us with a bitter taste in our mouths. Not a nice experience.
They also have a real cat problem there - as we arrived we noticed cats feeding off the (often) uncleared tables and fighting underneath the seats. One cat must’ve taken oily/fatty scraps off a plate and eaten them on my seat as I got back home with a large greasy oily orange stain on the back of my trousers. Great shame as I had to spend the next 25 minutes trying to scrub it out of my trousers.
Overall this place isn’t great which is surprising considering it has such great reviews. I would recommend other places if you want to be treated nicely with...
Read moreEasily the best Moroccan dining experience I’ve had on my trip throughout the country. After feeling underwhelmed by the majority of food I’d experienced thus far I was recommended to Sofias by a local. Arriving at the establishment just after 8pm we were greeted by a full dining area but waited happily for 10 minutes before being seated. 20 minutes after ordering our food arrived, the aubergine was balanced well and tasty, full of Moroccan spices. Unlike other couscous I’ve had in Morocco, the vegetable couscous was light, fluffy and brought alive by the sultana & onion reduction on top….. deeeelicious. The veal & prune tagine was the best I’ve eaten and its rich sauce deserved to be a dish of its own.
If youre looking for delicious authentic Moroccan made by a local cook and you aren’t deterred by a few friendly cats and plastic chairs then this...
Read moreWe ate at Cafe Sofia three times during our 3 day stay in Chefchaouen and probably would have eaten there more if we had found it earlier. Both hariras are flavorful and comforting and are a wonderful way to begin a meal. We also tried the vegetable sandwich and couldn’t believe how tasty it was. The pastella with chicken, almond, and cinnamon was incredible and well worth the wait to prepare. We also tried the vegetable couscous and the kefta tagine. We certainly sampled our share of tagine and couscous while in Morocco and found that most were very bland so we were pleasantly surprised when Sofia’s were bursting with flavor. The kefta is out of this world. The teas are lovely and the coffee is strong. The family who runs the restaurant is so sweet and the service is impeccable. Don’t...
