Nestled in the historic courtyard of Yatkha Bahal, Newa Ghasa Basantapur offers a compelling blend of Newari heritage and culinary craft. From the moment you step in, the traditional decor wooden carvings, Bhairav masks, oil lamps, and Newari artwork immerses you in Kathmandu’s cultural heartbeat . Dining on the rooftop on a pleasant day, I began with a Mixed Bara. The lentil patties were delightfully crispy yet soft inside, fragrant with garlic and chilies, and perfectly paired with chutney . Next came Sapu Mhicha, the traditional Newari delicacy of beef leaf tripe. Although initially hesitant, its zesty, rich filling won me over—it’s a must-try . The service was warm and notably authentic: servers dressed in traditional Newari attire and offering regional drinks chhyang poured in clay pots, and aila ignited then sipped with wooden straws enhanced the immersive experience . We also tried sukuti and sadeko chicken momo, both juicy and well-seasoned, ideal companions to the local beverages . The ambiance the soothing Newari folk music, warm lighting, plants, and traditional cushions makes it a cozy yet vibrant spot, especially in the evenings when live music is on . Prices are reasonable for the quality: a meal for two averages around NPR 2,500 quite fair considering the authenticity and atmosphere . Open daily from roughly 11:00 AM to 9:30 PM, with parking and digital payments accepted . In sum: Newa Ghasa Basantapur delivers a sensory and culinary journey into Newari culture. Whether you’re a local rediscovering heritage tastes or a visitor looking for authentic Nepalese cuisine, it’s a delightful destination...
Read moreHere's a place that intrigued me for a long time, even though it's not that old, and well, I don't regret having ventured there! With a few friends it's bound to be nicer, which I definitely did. The entrance is a nice colour with a host or hostesses to welcome you. And then it's off on an adventure in this old traditional house in the old quarter of Durbar Square. You almost get lost in all the rooms, which are available and well laid out. They are simply but effectively decorated, as is every corner of the house. Even the commodities in the first floor are really cool. Finally, as you make your way to the terrace, you first pass by an intermediate level where there's a rather impressive bar with a display of mugs that will lure you into ordering the local beer. Then a small double staircase takes you up to the terrace, which is furnished without chairs, so you have to stand up to sit down and order food. The menu is very traditional Newar, as the name of the restaurant announces at the entrance. But above all, the prices are very reasonable! If you feel like it, you can also enjoy a pleasant chicha in the flavour of your choice, all in a very cool Nepali pop...
Read moreIf I could give 0 stars I would. The food was not good and I accidentally made double transaction through scan on 4th Jan and when I come home to see there was two transactions made by mistake. The next day when I called them they said it will be transferred to you in 24 hrs but I didn't received my payment back. The staff were not well behaved and when I asked them the owner's number they refused saying that it will be done by today and not doing it. I would never ever visit here and would also prevent my friends and family from going here.
(Edit: After calling khalti several times and newa ghasa several times and also visiting newa Ghasa few times, I received my refund today(Jan 16) but this is totally unacceptable and...
