We visit Amsterdam every year and Café Pieper happened to be a few blocks away from where we were staying last visit. We tripped into this little gem looking for a beer after dinner and enjoyed it so much that we stopped-in several times during our stay. While we saw different staff almost every night, everyone was pleasant and engaging, even when it was jam packed on Friday night! The crowd ranged from jovial groups of younger kids to gatherings of folks more than twice their age, yet everyone blended perfectly. This is more of a beer and genever bar as they didn’t even have the ingredients for a Negroni but the charm of this mid-1600’s building, the staff, different genevers and the antique wire rack on the bar holding free hard-boiled eggs had me missing it when I got back to the States. Great local spot on the edge of the canal that was more than pleasant to...
Read moreNice spot by the canal. Coffee was good, and cost around 3,50 euros. Toilets were clean, but you have to go down steep stairs so accessibility is limited. They only served drinks, no food. We were there around 2pm, so they might have food at other times of the day. They don't accept Visa, Mastercard or AmEx, so I had to go for a bit of a walk to an ATM to be able to pay (who uses cash in 2022? I've managed without cash my entire stay except here), which was very inconvenient. I was a bit annoyed when the waiter tried to argue that this is normal in Amsterdam and that not even the big supermarkets accept Mastercard or Visa here, which is just not true. Next time I will go to any other café that has a canal view instead (a lot of them accept Mastercard!), but if you have cash you'll be safe with a nice coffee...

If you think to visit this horrible place, I highly recommend to you that, do not waste your time and money at the bar. Employees or the local customers may try to throw you out and hurt you physically. It was the worst experience during our holiday. 3 women from Britain were physically hurt in front of us. The bartenders threw them out by grabbing their arms and throwing them on the street like garbage. It literally was the most humiliating and upsetting experience I ever witnessed at a bar. They were just talking/chatting as a group with other people they met at the bar. They did not do any harm to anyone. They were assumingly talking loud, but I did not hear any disturbing voices durih my time at the bar. That was incredibly disrespectful of Cafe Pieper....
