Me and my wife booked the hotel for our honeymoon and we were not disappointed. Had my wife known just how steep the stairs were leading up to our room were then she might have asked me to book somewhere else. However, we are both glad that we didn't.
The staff were good for communication, contacting us the day after our booking to ask about our expected arrival time and to provide accurate and money saving instructions on how best to get to the hotel. As it was above a bar and we were arriving late, we picked up the keycard from the bar which was handy. Lugging the 23kg suitcase up the single flight of stairs was hard (no lift available) as we were on the top floor but the room was spacious, furnished to a high degree and had lots of little touches that made it special.
On the booking website we used, it was advertised as having a free breakfast. This was true, but we did not expect that the breakfast would be as DIY as it was. The minifridge in the room was stocked everyday with 2 cereal yogurt pots, several meat and cheeses in single serving packets and two small bottles of Minute Maid orange juice. Each day the fresh bread and crackers would be left on a ledge outside each room which was a nice touch, and there was a toaster, kettle and Nespresso machine as well. There were no mugs in the room though, just a couple of small glasses which was confusing for us. The TV showed a small range of channels including BBC1 and 2 and the Wifi signal was flawless throughout our stay. The ceiling fan was greatly appreciated and the window opened well on vent or fully open to see the canal below. Noise was not a massive problem for us as we were facing away from the main road but I can imagine it being an issue on the other side as the bar beneath is open until 3am on weekdays and 4am on weekends. Earplugs were provided next to each bed on arrival. The en-suite was great, again well furnished and worked like a charm.
The only issue we had was with the beds, As we were newly-weds and on our honeymoon, having two single beds pushed together was fine- until they started to move apart at inopportune times, if you know what I mean. A strong rubber band or two around the legs to hold them together would have made things a little bit easier. The mattresses, while a little too soft for my wife were perfect for me and we both slept well.
Depending on the reason you may be heading to Amsterdam, the hotel is perfectly situated next next to Leidseplein and there are many bars, restaurants and coffeehouses that are within easy reach. The trams are regular and take you all around the city and pretty much everyone speaks English.
We were very impressed with the hotel despite early reservations and even when the heavens opened on our third day there we were more than comfortable to chill in the...
Read moreSharing my experience at Cafe Weber tonight. My friend and I were having a casual evening, enjoying some drinks, when things took a turn for the worse. Another patron aggressively confronted us over a video call, claiming it was disturbing them. When we calmly asked the waiter if there was such a rule, things escalated quickly. That person, who claimed to be the owner of the bar , got extremely hostile, insisting that we leave immediately. Upon my request for them to leave our table, the individual claiming to be the bar owner clenched his fist and menacingly stated, "Then you will speak with my punch." Feeling increasingly uncomfortable, I reiterated that I no longer wished to stay and offered to settle the bill if they agreed to let us leave peacefully. However, this only seemed to further enrage the person, who persisted in their aggressive behavior, advancing towards us. They continued to make threats, claiming they would call the police and suggesting that their Dutch nationality would result in biased treatment in their favor, given our status as foreigners. The escalating aggression and intimidation only heightened our sense of unease and urgency to leave the premises.Even after offering to pay our bill and leave peacefully, the situation intensified. They became physically aggressive, the guy who claimed to be owner is pushing my friend aside by shoulder as she attempted to pay the bill, and continued to escalate the confrontation.
Feeling threatened and unsafe, we managed to leave, but I'm deeply concerned about the level of aggression and intimidation we faced. I'd like to report this incident to ensure the safety of others and prevent similar incidents...
Read moreI'm really not sure why this place has the reviews it does. I've travelled a fair bit and stayed in many places, and in comparison this place is definitely a 1 or 2 star hotel. I'm fairly convinced they don't change the sheets after every guest and give the place a thorough clean. Just a surface tidy and mop the floors. We found a blood stain on the pillow and dirt and hair in between the sheets, I'm not sure how else to explain that? Also, one of the biggest things for us was that they are dishonest about the fact the hotel is above a very very noisy bar (but honestly is actually a night club - very loud music till 3 or 4 am) why can't it just be a normal pub with a bit of music till midnight. We stayed on a Wednesday and Thursday night and this was an issue. They're just trying to make as much money as they can without being honest with paying guests. The breakfast was very average, processed meats and cheese that were over packaged, so much wasteful single use plastic! Businesses should really be trying harder. A couple of tough/stale bread per person each morning was jot good enough for the price. Nothing like the photos that show croissants and buns!!!! Also, DO NOT stay here if you have a suitcase, the room is not worth lugging it up the carpeted ladder. Just find somewhere else. The room is really only suitable for guest who have come to Amsterdam to party, carrying nothing much more than a backpack and don't mind wasting their money on over...
