One of the 'jewels' of the Jordaan, Pompadour is a small cozy tearoom located in Huidenstraat, in the city's charming "9 Streets" neighbourhood.
Chocolaterie Pompadour, a well-known patisserie and chocolate shop and tearoom, attracts visitors from all over the world. At the front are glass display cabinets with rows of beautifully crafted chocolates and other sweet treats, facing an assortiment of mouth watering pies, quiches, cakes and pastries.
There is a raised section at the rear, with great views of the street outside. Here there are only a handful of tables, where you can forget about the calories and savor one of the many delectable treats on offer, accompanied by hot chocolate, coffee and tea. The freshly brewed ginger and mint teas, served with honey, are especially recommended. Due to limited space, it's pot luck as to whether a table will be available, so reservation definitely recommended.
This outstanding Pâtissier and Chocolatier is a 'must' for those with a sweet tooth. Prices are...
Read moreReturned to Pompadour recently for their delectable dark chocolate Orangettes. This is a classy chocolatier and tearoom on Huidenstraat with opening hours of 10-6pm (M-F), 9-6pm (Sat) and 12-6pm (Sun).
Pompadour is always busy, often with a queue forming just to enter their shop. What you will also notice is that those entering and buying cakes and other treats at the counter are locals, not tourists. This is always a very good sign when seeking out great foods.
As hinted above, we adore the dark chocolate covered orange peels from Pompadour. The dark chocolate is richly flavoured, just slightly bitter and the orange filling is just perfect. We are big fans of orangettes and try them regularly during our travels around Europe. Right now, these are our very favourites anywhere.
Needless to say, we bought several bags, one to nibble on while in Amsterdam and a couple to take home with us. Next time in Amsterdam will see another visit to Pompadour for more of their dark...
Read moreWhen I planned my trip to Amsterdam last year, I made some research into the different chocolatiers in the city. Since I had limited time, I selected 3 chocolatiers, but got a good variety of products at each of them. Pompadour came out on top on all counts, and were actually the best chocolates I've ever had. All varieties were mindbogglingly good, but the best was the dark chocolate marzipan bonbons. The cakes and pastries looked just as good, but I unfortunately did not have the time taste them. The decor of the shop is lavish, but not very spacious. All the Amsterdam chocolatiers I visited were unique and all 3 deserve 5 stars, but if you only have limited time and/or budget I recommend Chocolaterie Pompadour as the best that I...
