Five ways is five+ ways of excellent. 5 out of 5 stars all around (no pun intended)
So this big cafe takes a bit of getting used to. For one the downstairs space is huge and sparsely filled with furniture, they’re literally 0 tables in the whole space. Only benches, bar stools and some seats in the annex
This can make the space—which judging from the various unused vaults was probably a jewelry shop or a small bank before—feel a bit cold. It does mean that people either chat (rather than work) or only hang out to finish their coffees
The non-work vibe of the space grew on us as we stayed for a while. We also noticed that the person in charge of the art and decor as well as the music set up gave the place a lot of thought. And it’s one of those rare coffee places that hasn’t gone full blown post post modern on the late art
Furthermore the quality of the coffee is absolutely five ways of great! As are the various cookies, pastries and bagels (which they source from the best sourdough bagel place in town). The staff is very kind and considerate, paying attention to individual customers and generally vibing
Were still not sure what the “five ways” name refers to, but this is certainly a place that allows you to get caffeinated in five ways, impress a date in five ways, blast through your calorie count in five ways, and get art inspired in five ways
and bonus points for the poster in the bathroom reminding you that keeping it clean is “demure, considerate and cutesy”
5/5 stars...
Read moreThey allegedly have different policies for laptops on weekdays and weekends. There is no sign indicating this, and they have the audacity to request that you turn off your laptops. The personnel are also passive-aggressive and rude in their approach. With a fake smile, one of them told me that people want to enjoy their coffee on the weekends. Well, I was there to enjoy my coffee as well until your fake and passive aggressive smile.
Other establishments might also have similar policies but they are not misleading their customers and put signs at the cash register and the tables, and they usually reserve a table for people who work ;)
It's 2023, and some people use their laptops for more than just work matters, such as reading a newspaper or a book. Would they also ask someone reading a book or a magazine to leave? Sometimes, people have to work together in a shared space because they don't have another option and still want to enjoy some coffee in the meantime. Their assumptions about who brings a laptop and who doesn't seem to take precedence over their customers' satisfaction. Is profit their primary concern? I used to buy my coffee beans here regularly, but I won't be setting foot in this place anymore and will be spreading the word.
Edit: Exactly one week after writing this review and receiving a response, I was passing by and saw two white men on their laptops working and drinking coffee inside. What makes them an exception to this protocol that has been there for a...
