Amsterdam Fries – Our Family Verdict
With all the hype about fries in Amsterdam, we made it a mission to try a few spots ourselves (never trust just YouTube reviews!). Here’s how they ranked for us:
Vlaamse Frites Snackland (Damrak)⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fluffy inside, just-crisp outside, and surprisingly tasty even without sauce. We went for the popular friet sauce—warning, they’re generous with it. A large (€5.95 + sauce) was more than enough to share. Swift service and polite staff.
Pietersma Snacks (Albert Cuyp Market, East entrance) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not on our list, but a happy surprise when paired with kibbeling. Fries had great texture, already lightly salted, and very good value (large €4.50). Friendly, fast service.
Manneken Pis (Damrak) ⭐⭐⭐½ The YouTube-famous one. Fries looked the part—crispy, fluffy—but lacked flavour on their own. The Cajun spice shaker made them much better. Pricey at €9 for a large (sauce extra).
Fabel Friet (Runstraat)⭐ Our biggest disappointment. Thin, skin-on fries, overcooked and a small portion for the price (~€4.50, plus €1.50 for cheese). Busy with long queues (likely from influencer hype), but sadly our least favourite.
Price Perspective: KFC large fries are €3.75. So while Amsterdam’s fries seem pricey, the top three here are much better quality and worth it.
Final Thought: Our list is just one family’s verdict—fries are all about personal taste and the experience. Try a few for yourself and see which one...
Read moreHow to pretend having a popular fry place? Have only 1 person serving fries, zero organization and wait to have 30 confused customers in front of your business. Now your shop looks busy.
Large group of people waiting in front, no line, just a mix of customers waiting to order or waiting for their order, people cut in front of you or take your order and leave. You fight your way through the counter, place your order, and go back in the pack of people. No receipt, also, you would think calling your order as a “number” would be best, no she will say “medium truffle mayo”, very easy when 3 other people also ordered the same thing, make sure to pay attention as she won’t say that loud.
Saw the girl laughing with the cashier while preparing fries, she hided her laugh by putting the empty paper cone over her mouth and then proceeded to use it to serve fries. Not very clean if you ask me.
Aside from this experience, the fries were underwhelming, very dry, cut some thick cut of potatoes and place them in an oven, that’s what they taste like. No crispiness. It sounds bad but they were my least favourite fries I have ever tried, sauce is average. I was expecting...
