My visiting friends rave about the place and took me here. They ate here twice while they were in town for dinner I think it’s good if you’re not sure where to go and you want something safe and easy, but it’s quite mediocre and salty. Also a strange smell when you walk in from the burners they use for the fondue.
I would have felt better about the visit if they greeted us less pretentiously when walking in. We had reservations and my friends event called to tell them we are 10 minutes behind, but when we arrived to a mostly empty restaurant, they didn’t have the reservation and acted like we were at the Beverly Hills Hotel. They eventually seated us upstairs.
After waiting about 10 minutes for a waiter they finally arrived to take the order. It’s one of those vibes when you know that you should order the drinks and main meal all at once.
My chicken sate was okay. The cheese fondue was nothing to be excited about. The wine was okay.
The location is great but there are also many other great places right down the street.
Plus side is we got a table and I didn’t smell like fondue all night. My friends loved their steak and soup. The front door was propped open which I loved, since the fresh air was nice.
Astoundingly, a Dutch friend called the restaurant while we were there and wanted to surprise us with a drink on her. She’s is Spain and it was a nice surprise, but the waiter or manager told us he “didn’t have time for that” but that she did try. Wow. So no free...
Read morePost Covid Review- Amsterdam was a very nice 65 degrees (18.3 C) and Warmoesstraat Street had some traffic but obviously reduced due to the prevailaing circumstances, so I jumped at the opportunity to walk without reservations to Het Karbeel (check out on Trip Advisor-not affiliated). I had the PK Apple {Dutch Pancakes with Apple, Cinnamon, Raisins, and Powdered Sugar} served with original maple syrup. Had a Latte w/ Baileys and Whipped Cream. Both were excellent in taste and portion size for only 22 euro. For lunch, Irina recommended the Club Sandwich, Kaasloempia (Springroll filled with mature Cheese, served with a Mustard dip) and the Uiensoep (Onion soup), which will be on my next visit to this place. Irina was extremely helpful and kind (she speaks 5 languages and was very knowledgeable so plz ask for her but be patient because this place can get very busy). A little background on this place, like most Amsterdamian buildings, it is well kept and maintained. It was an Amsterdam Cheese manufacturing location turned into a restaurant. All employees there must speak Dutch because of the established long-term relationships. Say hello to Simba the popular cat that is somewhat an unofficial mascot. Note-there are many cats in this area and the reason for this is because most of the city is under sea level and it helps control the rodent population...
Read moreA restaurant with a great deal of personality. There is a cat sleeping in a chair by the entrance, where it is written "Lazy Day". You can eat right on the ground floor or at the top, next to the cellar and a copy of Rembrandt's night watch. An excellent meat with pepper sauce. Perfectly covkef. First, the sauce is strange, then we start to enjoy it. With the famous Dutch fries, which can be "drowned" in mayonnaise or ketchup. They have several types of beer and wine, including several served in a glass of wine. The staff is friendly and the price is very friendly. A cheerful surprise on a street with the boring supply of pizzas and hamburgers.
No ponto.
