Overall Experience: Arrived around 10am on a Monday morning and there wasn't a clean table for a solo diner. Was offered to sit on the couches for 5-10 minutes to wait and was seen to in good time. Sat outside there was a nice view of some classic Amsterdam-style architecture. Unfortunately there are roadworks going on currently so perhaps an inside seat would be better. (Not their fault) Pretty pungent smell of pickled onion coming out of the grate in the floor. Harassed by wasps the whole time I was eating (also not restaurants fault) Glassware for water was pretty dirty so didn't end up drinking any.
Food Quality: Food overall very tasty, fresh pita, good temperature, quite varied. No vegan option on the menu only veggie options with items removed. I opted to make the veggie breakfast into a vegan friendly option and CAREFUL - you WILL be charged for the extra items, they won't be swapped. (I wasn't informed about this) Disappointing when I came to pay and was charged an extra €6 for things that should have replaced the items taken off the breakfast. Coffee was good but expensive for nothing special. Oat milk option available.
Customer Service: Staff mostly polite and attentive. I asked about vegan options and the young waitress let out an ugh and asked her manager cleaning the table behind her to explain to me in more detail.
Recommendation: Would not recommend this restaurant to vegan diners. There are likely cheaper and better vegan-friendly places very nearby. Fine if vegetarian or you eat eggs but do heed the things...
Read moreDo not go if you’re not able to speak Dutch. The barista who works the counter is discriminatory who does not like Americans. She will prioritize the locals over you because I cannot quote the language she used because Google will not post the review. You will leave hungry, disappointed, and miserable.
Since I can’t respond to the owner I’ll just edit and add this in. We showed up to a relatively empty restaurant. Plenty of open tables around, walked up to the counter asked for a table for 2 and was told wait outside and someone will grab you shortly. We did as we were asked. Proceeded to wait outside and form the line as no one else was there yet, then over the next 2 minutes 20 people walked into the restaurant, spoke to the same barista we did, and they were seated immediately.
We went back inside to ask the barista if she forgot about us, to which she said “no” and we said okay but what about our table as we were the first people here in line… her response was “you will have to wait now with the other tourists because now the restaurant is full.” If this is your definition of fair and non discriminatory service, Mortimer is the perfect...

We went there for coffee and tea, and couldn't resist ordering a slice of their delicious banana bread. The café offers a super cozy atmosphere where you can choose to sit inside, upstairs, or outside. The staff was incredibly friendly and promptly served our orders, adding to the warm and welcoming vibe of the place.
