Paradiso is located in the former association building from 1879 of the denomination "De Vrije Gemeente" , which was designed by the architect GB Salm .
The building was squatted by a group of hippies in October 1967 to have their own club. About fifty people continue a 'love-in' started in the Vondelpark in the newly squatted building. However, the police soon raided and put an end to the festivities.
The municipality was looking for an answer to the need for housing based on the new forms of youth culture. Under the leadership of HCJ Struijk van Bergen as director, the Municipal Youth Care Agency focused on solving the problem and organizations such as the Amsterdam Municipal Leisure Centers Foundation and the Lijn 3 Foundation were set up. These are committed to the establishment and maintenance of youth centers, which resulted in the establishment of Paradiso in early 1968. Already in the first months, well-known groups such as Pink Floyd , The Pretty Things and Captain Beefheart performed. Paradiso, for example, soon received the stamp 'pop temple'. The success of Paradiso served as a source of inspiration for municipal youth care agencies from Rotterdam and Utrecht, among others, who wanted to set up similar projects.
In the 1970s, the original stained glass windows of the church building were replaced with mirrors on the inside and wooden panels on the outside. During the renovation in 1993, it was decided by the artists Hans van Houwelingen and Berend Strik to design new stained-glass windows.
The pop temple celebrated its 50th anniversary on the weekend of March 31, 2018. To celebrate this, an exhibition about the history of Paradiso opened in the Amsterdam Museum on Amsterdam's Kalverstraat at the end of March 2018 . The pop stage celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special program and various...
Read moreParadiso My favorite venue in the World. Literally. 3 Tiered Former Church always has the Spirit of Love and Community. Not to Mention Superb Sound Seating and Sensibility. The Stage is where Legends are Made. Perfectly Sized constructed and Situated it offers Religious Experiences in the Name of Music. The performances I have Seen are too many to mention, But I must name a few. Chaka 2 nights Grace Jones George Clinton and the Full Funkadelic 2 nights KRAFTWERK 2 nights of 7 and the Pretenders coming in Fall. But there are so so many More. Summer Dance Forever is still my Go To Dance Event for the Culture. All of It. House Music included. There is no Other quite like this Experience. With that said I went to Jose James presents 1978. The year he was born. In this lifetime. Because he is What’s called an ‘Old Soul’ With influences ranging from the Catholic Church hymnals to Billie Holiday to Doo Wop to Prince to bill withers and Beyond his library is booked. With the 12th studio release after a 5 year working project, I expected a deeper intellectualized yet textural offering. The lyrics seemed more conceptual than Polished. Which works for him Due to his ability to transform His Voice. Literally. From a chorus to a Turntablist cut up improvised LIVE. What somewhat threw me left was the heavy guitar influence. Machada (I hope I spelled it correctly) Went Hendrix on the crowd delivering a sizzling solo several times. But was I at a Rock Show? Diversity abound This Show May not be for everybody, But it has something to...
Read moreI had high hopes for my first experience in Paradiso as it seemed like a nice grassroots venue like others I have attended gigs at in the past in NL but I was left sorely disappointed - it all seems so rushed like we're herded in and then back out like most UK venues these days - no information when I bought my ticket that it has gone completely cashless so lucky I had a card on me that worked - no information about lockers which would have been handy for me to know so instead I had to rush back to the station to collect my rucksack at 1am - no bottled beer and pints served in plastic tumblers - very few places around the sides of the venue where I was on the balcony to put drinks down - and to top it all off I couldn't get into the main area on the ground floor - I planned to watch one album from the balconies and then go down stairs for the second album on the latest Pixies tour but it was so packed I could not get in the door and ended up going back upstairs whereupon I had lost my space and spent the rest of the gig unable to get a view of the stage - ticket capacity needs to reflect a full but comfortable ground floor only and upper levels can be optional otherwise they need to separate these areas and sell different tickets - I don't appreciate spending a lot of money on a concert which meant a great deal to me and then turning up and being unable to get into the main floor - I see from other recent reviews that the place had gone down hill so maybe in the past it was better but anyway this was my...
