Restaurant Johannes — Restaurant in Amsterdam

What was intended to be our last wonderful night in Amsterdam was totally ruined by it experience at Johannes. Up until the point when we were presented with our check it was pretty much flawless with the exception that it took 3 and a half hours to complete our dinner. We arrived at 6:00 that evening and did not leave until almost 19:00 PM. What we thought were pleasant spaces in services turned into interminable delays. The to cap things off when presented with our check the handheld machine was not witking. Mind you it was the last night of a 6-day stay. Our credit cards worked all over Amsterdam for restaurants, shopping, coffee, etc. with no problems. We received no notice from our banks that there were problems. The waiter at one point admitted it was a new machine and he had had a problem previously. But when it didn’t work at our table he moved us to the front to keep trying - 3 cards from 3 different banks and none worked. It is a very small restaurant and this was done repeatedly in front of everyone! We were never so embarrassed in our lives. The entire trip, our complete experience was ruined in that moment. Of course, I just paid cash and couldn’t wait to get out. I checked with our bank on one of the cards when we returned to the hotel and the card was working fine. I may never return to Amsterdam and definitely never to Johnannes after...

Cozy restaurant, friendly and attentive service. The 5 course surprise menu, had two fish as starter, a delicious vegetarian dish (beetroot), rib eye steak in two variations and an amazing dessert. On top quite a number of amuse gueule are added in between. For 65EUR this is a nice experience. Portions are on the smaller side, but it add up... . We chose the matching wines and got 5 glasses of very nice wines perfectly matching the food for 5 countries, 9EUR a glass. When you know some of the wines or check out the ones on the wine list, I personally find a 4 to 5 fold mark up a bit pricy.... but that`s just a side note. All in all we had a perfect evening in a beautiful setting, with very good service and we will come again. This restaurant is on the edge of getting a one star, if they get a bit more courageous and experimental with their cooking. I wish...

Huge disappointment. I don't know what happened to the restaurant... my friends and i went there two years ago for a nice xmas dinner, it was outstanding and therefore we decided to go back for another xmas dinner again. The quality went down hill, the place smelled like bathroom/odor/canal... the food was worse than mediocre. We ordered the 5-course surprise menu. It was indeed a surprise, surprisingly bad. Only the free appetizer and dessert was satisfactory. With 5 of us, two bottles of wine and two bottles of water, we ended up paying 92€ each. With that price, there are plenty of other better restaurants in amsterdam to choose from. Really hope they do something with the smell of the venue and bring the food quality back to the standard two yrs ago. Very sad to see great place like this went...
