Anjappar Chettinad offers a nice and very original blend of flavors from India. This chain is already quite popular worldwide and as soon as they opened in Utrecht, they became a topic of discussions on social media. I had to go there. I called them on a Sunday afternoon and realized that is is not possible to get a reservation - though the manager mentioned that I drop wait, they might be able to arrange a table. Their location is easily approachable in the center of the city right across the mall. We started with a round of Medu Wada, Paneer 65 and Poricha Kozhi (Anjappar Fried Chicken). It took less than a bite to realize that we made a right decision and it was worth the wait. Wada was very soft and fluffy. Fried chicken had a nice very authentic flavor. It was not as spicy as it seems to be (or you find in restaurants in India) - but had a perfectly balanced taste that everyone would find palatable. In the main course, we ordered a South Indian mean (thaali) that came with several curries, rasam, raita, suji (kesari bath) dessert, papadam and rice. Everything was perfect. We also had a Hyderabadi Chicken Biryani. I'll be honest because I haven't been able to find authentic Hyderabadi Biryani outside Hyderabad (except a takeaway called Hyderabadi Dum Biryani in Milpitas California). Anjappar's Hyderabadi biryani was not really the same taste - but it was certainly something to remember. The best part was - the flavors of spices were perfect but it didn't feel "too spicy". Their drinks (indian mocktails) are also interesting. There was an almond shake and something with chia seeds - both are worth trying. I'm definitely going back to try more items on the menu (it's a pretty long menu). Plus points for the quality of service and the pace of bringing plates and plates of amazing meal. The manager and the owner are amazing people and their personality is reflected in all the operations that lead to the experience you would remember.

Review edit after the third visit: I reduced my previous rating of 5 stars after our third visit. We were there at 4.45 on a Thursday, and as soon as we entered the manager (I assume from all our visits) asked us how he can help us and when we replied that we have a reservation just coldly asked us to wait. He was attending to two other people who were there for takeaways. While it’s okay to ask to wait, it can be said in a nicer manner making eye contact at the least. What I realised during our evening is that the way you are served depends on the person who serves you. Some people were served very nicely with smiles while others not. Two people who came after us were asked to sit right next to us although the entire restaurant was empty at that point with many two person tables. They asked the waiter if they could sit at another table (understandable that it doesn’t make sense to sit cramped next to another couple when the whole restaurant is empty!) and the waiter just said no! And this wasn’t great for us either. Being from India I know that they are not trying to be rude to customers, but I would imagine that the interaction with customers is also important for the whole experience at the restaurant. With regards to food, the Anjappar fried chicken, which we liked very much the first two times, wasn’t as good this time. Although the chicken was crunchy, it didn’t taste of the usual marinade and this time it came with ketchup instead of the usual green chutney. The chicken thali was good and tasted the same, but the mutton Sukka masala wasn’t as tender and flavourful as it usually is. Maybe it’s also the fact that we were there before the usual dinner time that made this visit less enjoyable. Earlier review: Really good South Indian food! We went there twice in the week they opened and enjoyed everything we had. I especially liked the fried chicken starter, the porotta and the chicken thali.

Looking for that authentic Indian food experience, then look no further! Anjappar in the Netherlands is easily more than a notch above Anjappar in India. It has become my go to spot whenever I miss South Indian food. Ambience: (5/5) The layout is a little different to that of the one in Amsterdam, but the Utrecht one does have more seating and you do feel that vibe of being in a bustling restaurant. I was there for 18:00 till nearly 20:30 and it was full the entire time. Testament to the amazing food that is available here. The seating ranges in size and the staff also put tables together when needed. Food & Drink: (5/5) My go yo non-alcoholic drink at Anjappar is the mango lassi. One of those drinks that you could just keep have more glasses of. Additionally is great for folks who have a lower spice tolerance as it helps mellow the spice in the food. The South Indian chicken masala here is brilliant. The flavours are spot on. There is a little heat to it and yet you can see how well all the various spices have been blended and as the chicken is marinated well in it, the flavour profile is perfect. The ghee dosa here is another one not to miss, enough ghee to make it hard, but also not overpowering in the food. Finally the biriyani here is fantastic. The spices they use really feels like I’m eating it back home. Service: (5/5) I always love the staff at Anjappar, they are always so kind and accommodating. Ended up showing up early for my appointment and they helped with getting me a table. They also go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and cared for. Keep up the amazing work! Summary: (5/5) By far the best South Indian restaurant chain in the Netherlands. Looking forward to being back soon.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Anjappar Utrecht with my friends 4 of us, and it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. This restaurant truly exceeded all my expectations, and I can't wait to share my thoughts on this culinary gem and Owner's of the Restaurant

Ambiance:

Restaurant's elegant and inviting ambiance. Soft lighting, tasteful decor, and a cozy atmosphere set the stage for irrespective of the time either Lunch or Dinner

Service:

The service here was impeccable. The staff was not only attentive but also incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. Our server helped us navigate the extensive Menu list of Authentic South Indian dishes and Drinks and offered fantastic recommendations. They ensured that our dining experience was seamless and enjoyable.

Food:

The food! Every dish we ordered was a work of art. The ingredients were fresh, and the presentation was exquisite. I highly recommend starting with the Soup especially Nandu Rasam, Nenjelumbu Karumilagu Rasam ( if you are bigger group), the flavour and aroma I could feel my South especially TamilNadu. which was a burst of flavors that awakened our taste buds. and then starter we have ordered Nethili Fish Fry and Mutton Kola Urundai is strongly recommended. For the main course, we have opted for the Special Naatu Kozhi Briyani and Mutton Dum Briyani, and it was nothing short of exceptional. The flavors were well-balanced, and the portion size was just righ and it was the perfect sweet ending to our meal.

Price:

Anjapar Utrect is budget-friendly option in town, the quality of food and service justifies the price. It's the perfect place if you want give perfect treat for your taste bud.

Conclusion:

Anjappar Utrect was nothing short of extraordinary. The ambiance, service, and, most importantly, the food, all contributed to an unforgettable dining experience. Special mention to Gowri and Jeevitha as they pay attention to each and every customer visting their resturant make sure Customer have perfect dinning experience. If you're looking for a restaurant that combines culinary excellence with top-notch service, Anjappar Utrect should be at the top of your list. I can't wait to return and explore more of their menu.
