Nestled along the picturesque Oudegracht in Utrecht, Oudaen presents itself as a charming blend of a cafe, restaurant, brewery, and meeting place. Its exterior resembles a small castle, making it a delightful sight that sets the tone for the experience inside.
Upon entering, I was immediately captivated by the decor. The interior features large, striking paintings that add character to the space, creating an inviting atmosphere. The combination of historic charm and contemporary art makes it a unique setting to enjoy a meal.
For lunch, I opted for their toasties, which were nothing short of delicious. Perfectly toasted with a satisfying crunch, they came with an array of fillings that balanced flavor and freshness. Each bite was a treat, showcasing quality ingredients and skillful preparation.
The service at Oudaen was commendable—attentive without being intrusive. The staff was friendly and eager to ensure that our dining experience was enjoyable, providing recommendations and promptly addressing our needs.
In summary, Oudaen is a delightful spot in Utrecht that beautifully combines its historic charm with modern amenities. Whether you’re looking for a cozy lunch, an inviting atmosphere, or a spot to enjoy a crafted brew, Oudaen delivers a memorable experience. Don't miss it if you get a...
Read moreWe have been to this restaurant in Utrecht a few times and really like the place. On a warm summer's day, it's a real joy to grab one of the canal side tables with the bustle of the city taking place above your heads. And we particularly enjoy the mussels and chips! Service is variable - on this occasion it took almost 20 minutes to attract one of the servers in order to get our bill. And the poor lady behind us ended up wearing her hot water when her selection of tea bags was being brought over to her. The menu is in Dutch and English in the main, which is useful for tourists - with the sole exception of Flammkuchen which turned out to be a flatbread style pizza (lovely) rather than the anticipated tart. Ah well, we live and learn. It brews its own beers which are great and you can see the old copper still at canal level. Toilets are not well signed and trying to work out how to get to canal level from the ground level interior is trickier than you would expect. Overall this is a lovely place that serves good food and the staff are friendly. We...
Read moreI was at Stadskasteel Oudaen for a celebration and family reunion lunch. We were with 10 adults and 3 children, and we all had a main dish 2 or 3 drinks. The venue is absolutely lively and lovely. The service was friendly and swift. The food was good, and a selection of lunch plates that combines typical Dutch things, such as uitsmijter, broodje kroket, or kip sateh, with more standard international elements such as burgers. It also offers a fine soup of the day option for the smaller appetite.
Because we were with a larger group, I reserved well in advance as we were coming on a Saturday. The booking process was simple, and changing the number of guests on the reservation a week in advance was unproblematic.
Oudaen is a 10-minute walk from Utrecht's central station, which is probably the most easily reached railway hub in the Netherlands. Ideal location if your party consists, like ours, of people coming from all over the country.
We had an excellent time, and it never felt rushed, and we left happy and satisfied after...
