My recent visit to Jumak was a mixed bag, with some highlights and some disappointments. The ambiance of the restaurant was pleasant enough, was pretty cozy. However, the seating layout is horrible, patrons are literally seated within less than an arm inch away from each other.
The service wasn’t quite there. While our server was polite, he wasn’t really fluent in english, when asked about the monday special they have going on all we could understand from him is the word “lunch only” but clearly says “all day” on facebook. This was one of the reason we decided to give this restaurant a go but decided to go ahead with it anyway.
Now for the food, both the dishes that stood out and impressed me with their flavors and presentation. The spicy chicken came with good temperature and flavorful on top of a sizzling plate . The bibimbap while tastes delicious we had was missing an egg, when it was clearly shown on menu photo and again we asked the server, however we could only think what he was trying to say is “if you choose to add meat, you don’t get the egg “.
In terms of pricing, I would say for a plate of spicy chicken at $22 was reasonable but for a bibimbap at $25 with an egg missing it wasn’t quite there. While it wasn't the most expensive restaurant in town, it also wasn't the cheapest. Overall, I felt that the value for money was below par, considering the ups and downs of the dining experience.
In conclusion, Jumak is a newly opened restaurant with some room for improvement. While there were aspects of the experience that I enjoyed, there were also areas that fell short of expectations.
Would I go back ? Maybe but...
Read moreI love Korean food and always delighted to explore Korean restaurants in Christchurch. Location for this restaurant was great for locals and tourists alike, being a quick 10 mins drive from Christchurch city central.
We were served by a friendly Korean oppa who lived in New Zealand for over 25 years. His English is excellent so we had absolutely no issues with communication. I ordered a spicy tofu seafood stew which was scrumptious and my husband had a beef rib stew. The broth was thick and flavorsome which felt so comforting on a rainy day. We also had the seafood pancake which was filled with an assortment of seafood accompanied by a delicious dipping sauce.
We also appreciate the oppa waiter asking us a couple of times if we required refill on the side dishes which were such great appetizers. An overall great experience and definitely recommended Korean restaurant to try in...
Read moreMy Korean wife and I just had a delightful meal at Jumak. Having acquired a taste for good Korean food while travelling in Korea, I was very impressed with the food. So was my wife - and it takes a lot for her to make yummy noises when she is eating!
I had the special Korean Chicken which was fantastic: crunchy and juicy to the very last mouthful. The sauces were the perfect blend of hot and salty. Wow!
I think Korea knows chicken the best - with Chicken and Beer, and Chicken and Soju, and Chicken with Soju and Beer, being absolutely iconic and delicious Korean traditions.
Wifey first had seafood noodles, which she demolished rapidly, barely allowing me a taste of the lovely seafoody broth. She had been fasting all day, and still had room for some Tteokbokki, which produced and endless series of smiles and lots of Mashisoyo noises.
Will visit again soon! Thanks for the...
