Sizzling Perfection: A Foodie’s Love Letter to Xiao Yang Sheng Jian One of life’s simplest yet greatest joys is biting into a perfectly pan-fried dumpling. Xiao Yang Sheng Jian, a name synonymous with crispy, golden-brown bottoms and juicy fillings, offers an experience that is nothing short of extraordinary. For any self-proclaimed foodie, this Shanghai delicacy is a must-try, and Xiao Yang elevates it to an art form. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the irresistible aroma of sizzling dough and rich pork broth, immediately awakening your senses. The chefs, masters of their craft, skillfully shape each dumpling with a thin yet elastic dough, expertly pleated at the top and generously stuffed with juicy pork filling. These little pockets of happiness sizzle in the pan, developing a beautifully crispy base while the top remains delightfully soft and slightly chewy. One bite, and you’re in heaven. The crunch of the caramelized bottom gives way to a rush of piping-hot, flavorful broth—the hallmark of an exceptional Sheng Jian Bao. The filling is perfectly seasoned, balancing savory pork richness with a subtle hint of sweetness. The secret? A precise ratio of gelatinous broth inside the dumpling, which melts into an umami-packed liquid as it cooks. Be warned: eat too quickly, and you might scald your tongue! The proper technique is to take a small nibble, sip the broth, and then enjoy the rest. While the Sheng Jian Bao is undoubtedly the star of the show, the supporting dishes deserve attention too. A steaming bowl of hot and sour soup, filled with silky tofu and a tangy broth, complements the dumplings perfectly. Meanwhile, a side of crisp cucumber salad, lightly dressed with garlic and vinegar, refreshes the palate between each indulgent bite. The atmosphere at Xiao Yang Sheng Jian is lively and inviting, reminiscent of a bustling Shanghai street stall. Seating is often packed, a testament to its popularity, but the wait is always worth it. Each bite transports you straight to the heart of China’s dumpling culture. For those who live to eat rather than eat to live, this is an experience that satisfies both the palate and the soul. If you ever find yourself near a Xiao Yang Sheng Jian location, don’t hesitate—order a plate, savor every bite, and let the flavors speak for themselves. Little hidden hole in the wall😊 not great atmosphere but great food. Delicious wonton soup ( best we've tried here), plenty of flavor to the filing and nicely filled wontons too. Soup base is good too. Note it's "authentic" good rather than "Western Fusion adapted good", ie texture is amazing, but you might not enjoy if you're not used to dried shrimp etc in the soup. Xiao long bao are enjoyable and definitely above average for NZ, but another local restaurant's was better, so didn't live up to the best in NZ claim for us. Was also accidentally put in a takeaway container which detracted from appearance, but the flavor, size and fullness of xiao long bao, along with the heat (was not as piping hot as other places) was the real let down. Definitely still good, but certainly not the best. Pork and vege baos were decent comfort food. Overall really enjoyed lunch here and much prefer this store's mix of selection( baos/dumpling/soup). Will return to try out other items for sure. Highly recommended. Just don't believe the best Xiaolongbao marketing.

I ordered "Shanghai Spicy Pork Noodle Soup" - this dish contains organ meat which wasn't declared to me when I purchased it. As a person of European descent I am not used to nor partial to eating mysterious animal innards. Hardly any pork meat - mostly organ meat. Service was pretty poor too - they initially refused to serve me even though it was 20 minutes before they closed. They didn't offer me a bag - I had to ask. Stuff leaked on the journey home. Dishes should be labeled clearly for European customers "Shanghai Spicy Pork Noodle Soup with Innards" would have worked. Very disappointing. Will not return.
