I have Celiac disease and am traveling in Peru. I don’t speak Spanish and have been struggling to find safe things to eat since my arrival 11 days ago. I’ve had some bad experiences in Peru eating gluten-free. I’ve been looking forward to my time in Cusco, specifically because I’ve been reading about many good restaurants offering GF menu items. Tonight, my wife and daughter went to Aton Cusco, primarily because of the many, MANY excellent reviews for this completely GF establishment. I am so glad we did! My wife and daughter, neither of whom are GF, could not have enjoyed themselves more. I think it was Aton himself that greeted us and was our server. He was delightful, warm, and friendly. His genuine and infectious smile never left his face the entire time we were there. The food was good, although to be completely honest, was not incredible. I had chorizo with cheese and sausage with cheese arepas. My wife and daughter shared the 4 mini hamburgers with fries. I enjoyed a very nice pisco sour that was presented beautifully. The food was good, there was more than we could finish, and the prices were astonishingly little compared to what I’m used to back home in the United States. The restaurant is tiny. When I say tiny, I mean it is easily the smallest restaurant I’ve ever eaten in. I could see someone being concerned about how small and packed this place is, but if you can get over that potential concern, you quickly realize that those conditions truly add to Aton Cusco’s charm. This restaurant may not be a good fit for a foodie or someone looking for a high-class experience, but for almost everyone else, I can’t recommend Aton Cusco enough! Our experience was an absolute delight, and may end up being the one meal my family and I remember the most from our near month long vacation to Peru. Do yourself a favor, and make the effort to get a bite to eat and a drink...
Read moreIf you’re spending some time visiting the mountain-high city of Cusco, you should definitely consider checking out Atón. The prices are super affordable, and the portions are really generous, so you’re bound to enjoy yourself. The venue is cosy and sits on a street corner. It’s not super spacious, but the staff were happy to move a few things around to make space for our group of four.
They are very generous with the fries and potatoes. Their burgers even come with fries included, which we didn’t realise until they arrived. The fried chicken was probably my favourite: crispy, and juicy inside. The chorizo and sausages were also delicious. Although I found them a little salty, they were well seasoned and full of flavour. We also wanted to get an empanada but they were unfortunately out of them, but they suggested the arepas instead, which were a good alternative. They were soft and paired well with the grilled chicken.
Everything was tasty and a great way to fill up, especially once you’ve adjusted to the altitude. We may have over-ordered, but we just asked to take the rest home instead.
The staff were all super friendly and happy to help. I asked for a sweet juice, and they recommended the piña (pineapple) juice. It was fun watching them make it fresh from a real pineapple. They also serve cocktails and hot drinks if you’re after something different.
The space itself is beautiful and very photogenic. It had the charm of a cosy old tavern you’d stumble upon in a quiet, remote village from an RPG. We had such a great time here. Definitely...
Read moreHad high hopes for this place having really struggled with finding somewhere with a gluten free menu! I ordered a burger which was average - it was rather dry to be honest, the beef patty and the bun that is. The fries were okay. One thing that was really off putting was a staff member being sick and heaving in the toilet. It’s a very small restaurant so I sat there the entire time listening to said staff member being unwell. If someone is in such a state, I don’t believe they should be in work - not only for their own wellbeing but for the customers too. One other thing I would say is to leave the sauce bottles on the table for people to help themselves as the tiny portions of sauces weren’t enough. I did ask for more and got another little teaspoon of each sauce. It’s a shame as the spicy sauce was actually really good! I really wanted to love this place but it fell short unfortunately
What a rather defensive and rude response from the owner. I have no reason to lie about a staff...
