Ayahuasca Grill is a true hidden gem in Aguas Calientes. It is a little off the main path, but absolutely worth finding. My wife and I have been twice — once for drinks, and again for dinner — and both experiences were fantastic.
We had the Caipirinhas on our first visit, which were perfectly balanced and refreshing after a long day of exploring. We enjoyed it so much that we came back the next night for dinner. This time we tried their Pisco Sours (of course!) along with the trucha al limón (trout with lemon) and palta reina (avocado stuffed with chicken salad). Every dish was beautifully prepared and full of flavor.
We have gotten to know two of the waiters, Daniel and Felipe, who are both incredibly friendly and welcoming. The service they provide makes the experience even better. And Felipe — if you read this — Jaime says you look like Bad Bunny! (You really do.)
If you are visiting Machu Picchu and want something authentic, relaxed, and just a little out of the way, Ayahuasca Grill is the place. Great food, great service, and a genuinely local vibe. Highly recommended.
BTW, I asked Bad Bunny if he could get me tickets to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, he could not, but we had an...
Read moreThis place almost caused me to miss Machu Picchu after years of waiting to see it.
We arrived in Aguas Calientes a little more than a day before our Machu Picchu tickets and ate at this restaurant that night we arrived.
I ordered and ate the Choripan sandwich which was not spectacular, but was ok. About twelve hours later I began suffering from intense intestinal cramping and other unmentionable issues related to that which has now lasted four and a half days. The only other thing I ate that day were a muffin and a waffle at a five star hotel elsewhere in Peru, so this was the only food I ate that day that could have cause my issues. My wife’s pizza was lukewarm and bland, as well. Total miss on the food in every way.
I did end up going to Machu Picchu and simply suffered through the pain all day.
Beware going here before making the trip up the mountain to Machu Picchu. Apparently they source their Chorizo from unsanitary places, or someone in the kitchen hasn’t heard of washing their...
Read moreThe best food me and my two friends ate in Peru (we have been to Cusco, Puno and Arequipa but not Lima): generous servings, fair price, very, very tasty food - with options for a lactose intolerant like me! Oh, and I kinda have high standards... ;)
I had a tilapia al ajo, muy rica!
The decoration is nice and local, the staff is very friendly and willing to make you feel welcome. They even changed the music to please us!
The river is by the restaurant, but a little too loud to be around, so we chose the tables on the village side for a slow and very pleasing afternoon.
Tip: at 14h the place only had a few people, a nice quiet time to go.
I went to Ayahuasca Grill because I wanted too have a great meal, after going to a few not-so-good places. I read lots of reviews on Google, chose the restaurant and I am happy to say I coudn't have been in a better place. It coronated the Machu Picchu tour.
If I had had the chance before leaving Águas Calientes, I would definetly...
