Very well located in Coimbra's downtown, this is definitely a go to place if you're looking for an authentic Portuguese restaurant experience, both in terms of food and atmosphere. You will find some of the best local delicacies and won't leave hungry for sure. Do yourself a favour and ask for a couple of starters, especially the Alheira à Brás. The downsides really are the prices which are sadly over inflated and tourist driven, so you won't see many locals here due to that, so I can't say the prices match the quality of the food, and that's the most important part for me. Another downside, unfortunately I should add, was the service; while it was great in all senses, very quick and they knew very well their menu items and wine pairing, we were being constantly interrupted (albeit very kindly so) in the middle of conversation to the point we would loose track of what we were talking about. I understand some guests appreciate this, but in my case I prefer a toned down approach, some help deciding at the beginning, and a bit of chat at the end about how it all went. All in all, it was a good experience, but I'm not sure I'll...
Read morePLEASE READ THE ENTIRE REVIEW An odd and bad experience at the same time. We stumbled across this place and thought we'd give it a try. The food was OK. We tried two of their specials. But as we were eating, a fado band came in to set up. That would be fine except that right in the middle of ordering dessert, or server said the live music was starting and just disappeared...never finishing taking our dessert order. Then, when there was a small break in the music we got up and went and asked for our bill. When we tried to pay, they told us that we had to pay cash (we knew we didn't have enough) or use a Portuguese credit card. No foreign credit cards. Had we known that we would not have dined there. They were rude about it, sent us to a "bank" to get cash which was a seedy ATM machine across the street. We tried it but don't have PINs for our cards. We went back and gave them what we had (trying to do the right thing) which was close. DO NOT GO THERE IF YOU DONT HAVE CASH OR LOCAL...
Read moreWhat out- Tourist Trap. The food that we ate at this restaurant was okay. Not outstanding but ok. However, what was not Ok was to was to serve us bread, olives, fish pate, a red mushroom/pepper sauce, and pre packaged butter and margarine only to have these items show up on our check for a total of 9 Euros. We never asked for these items and except for the bread and olives, did not eat much of the rest of it. I have been at restaurants that charge for bread and the likes but you normally order it from the server. It is unscrupulous to change 1.5 Euros for a one pre packaged butter and one pre packaged margarine. We have been in Portugal for 3 weeks and this is the first time we have run into this situation. There are so many other restaurants in Coimbra to choose from. ...
