Truly average in every way. Which isn't a bad thing, but don't expect spectacular anything or you may be disappointed.
We chose this place when we first arrived in Lagos based on the stellar reviews here on Google. We were expecting some seriously good food. But unfortunately, perhaps other reviewers have much lower standards or easier/bland tastes (maybe they are mostly British?)
The food was okay. The wine was okay. The service was okay. The atmosphere was okay. Nothing to write home about.
The fish was well-cooked, but that's about the best thing. The veg are very typical. Although it was good to have some nicely cooked sweet peas.
The Mozambique beef was not spicy AT ALL. It just tasted like tomato sauce on stewed beef. Meh. Again, it was okay, but not as good as reviews make it seem. (Trinchado in Africa is very spicy.) I just don't get why people like this dish so much? It was so-so and pretty boring flavoured, even if the meat was good quality beef.
DO NOT order bread. We already knew that bread is never free in Portugal and that's fine, and we saw there is also a charge for butter! But I thought, okay... 50c or whatever it was isn't that much for some nice butter. No. The butter was practically frozen and in those little packets of really terrible "whipped butter" you get in school cafeterias. To make it worse, they don't tell you it is 50c PER TINY PACKET. The server brought us 4. We assumed it was 50c for all since they were all on the same dish. I don't mind a small charge for butter if it's good butter, but this was a joke. Highway robbery lol. Sort of spoiled the experience when we saw that on the bill.
I will still try their piri piri chicken one day since people seem to rave about it here. But I will lower my expectations first and hopefully be...
Read moreIt's my first time in Portugal and in Lagos and wikivoyage said that this was the best place to get piri piri. So I came here tonight in my best as they have live band and had noted it wasn't over crowded and there were already 2 tables vacant and another couple on table for 6. Nobody was at the door so went to the bar and asked if I needed to reserve a table and they looked around and asked who for and I said just me (a medical professional on a solo trip getting some respite from work). They replied no they don't have a table but I can eat at the bar. I looked round and I was so confused and the bar was very secluded...I said not to worry it's ok... as I was leaving the waitress then comes to me and says we got a table in the garden and I was like oh great then asks how many ... (note I had already said just me and she knew). I said again oh just me.. then it's a oh no I dont think I can... this is in front of the main dining area as I am by the door and I was seriously embarrassed and upset I said it's ok don't worry I will go somewhere else .. her reply yeah maybe better... then I left I'm outside the restaurant she comes back a couple on a table for 6 offered to share their table with me. At this point I am humiliated I have been told twice they can't seat me and someone offers to allow me to sit with them in a restaurant with several tables empty.. I could not go back in and eat and I just felt like dirt after that.. I thanked then but said it's ok. I will go somewhere else. I don't have pride but I do know where I am not wanted. I left upset and feeling...
Read moreThis restaurant may look like your typical pub on the inside, but it if you walk through to the back, you will find their “secret garden,” a cozy outdoor seating area equipped with a charcoal grill, regularly manned by the chef and a goldfish pond (where kids and adults are welcome to feed the fish) that is the perfect spot for a meal or a few drinks after a long day on the beach. The simple menu has something for everyone, whether you prefer fresh fish, meat and potatoes or even a vegetarian potato and spinach curry, with the option to make most any meal vegetarian or vegan. The ambience of the garden is complemented by the warm and kind staff, who regularly attend to the guests, making jokes, refilling drinks and maybe even occasionally serenading you with a song or two. The meals are simple- fish and meat accompanied by flavorful, “no frills” peas, carrots, cabbage and potatoes are filling and allow the natural flavors of the fresh fish to come through. Overall, a great spot among the other more touristy...
