A Brasileira in Lisbon is one of the city’s most famous cafés, known for its historical significance and vibrant atmosphere. Here are some tips to make the most of your visit: 1. Timing: Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid peak tourist times and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere. 2. History: Take a moment to appreciate the historical significance of the café. Established in 1905, it was a popular meeting place for intellectuals, artists, and writers, including the famous Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. There is a statue of Pessoa sitting at one of the outdoor tables. 3. Location: It’s located in the heart of the Chiado district, making it a great spot to take a break while exploring the area. Nearby attractions include the Livraria Bertrand (the world’s oldest operating bookstore) and the Chiado Museum. 4. Menu: Try the “pastel de nata” (Portuguese custard tart) with a “bica” (espresso). A Brasileira is known for its traditional Portuguese pastries and strong coffee. 5. Ambiance: Enjoy the Art Nouveau décor inside the café. The interior is beautifully decorated with mirrors, wood panels, and brass fittings, providing a glimpse into early 20th-century Lisbon. 6. Outdoor Seating: If the weather is nice, opt for an outdoor table to people-watch and soak in the bustling atmosphere of Rua Garrett. 7. Service: Be prepared for the possibility of slower service, especially during busy times. Use this as an opportunity to relax and enjoy the surroundings. 8. Souvenirs: Consider buying some coffee or souvenirs from the café as a memento of your visit. They often sell branded items like coffee mugs and tins of coffee. Enjoy your time at A Brasileira and in Lisbon!

We stopped at A Brasileira on a sunny December Sunday morning, and spent a pleasant hour at an outside table near the Chiado statue, enjoying the cool breeze and cups of galão, coffee with milk. The coffee was the best we'd had in our five days in Lisbon. I can't say that the doçaria conventual we shared as we sipped our coffee was wonderful, though – too sweet and with a soggy, unappealing texture. A pastel de nata would have probably been a better choice, but we wanted to try another of the "nuns' sweets" made with egg yolks, which include pastel de nata but also other yolk-based pastries and sweets. Prices were a bit steep, but the café is in the middle of a busy tourist area and can command high prices. And we were willing to pay a bit more for the chance to sit and rest after we'd walked quite a bit, to enjoy the fresh air and people watching as we drank our coffee. A pleasant time altogether....

We don’t recommend this place as they treat the people differently. This was done by the head waitress. ( I guess she is) 0/5 : service 2/5 : food 3/5 : ambiance I see they want to serve as many people as possible but I’m not okay with unfair treatment. You have to act same for each customer. We were inside. A male waiter helped us to select a table and we sat at next to the wall on the 2nd row. There were 3 tables connected to each other and we was at the end. After a few minutes, I noticed that the head waitress was uncomfortable for that and she asked us if it was possible to separate the tables. I said okay no problem and I took my backpack under our table. At that point, it was okay for me if they needed 2 tables. However, it wasn’t the case. Just 2 people sat on the other side and somehow the middle table were reserved to them, even if we were the earlier one. I also didn’t get why she selected the 2nd row while same situation was valid for the 1st row. ( 2 people were sitting at next to wall and 3 tables connected to each other like us, check out the picture that I shared) SOMEHOW, she decided to ask us to separate the 2 tables. I believe they were fancier(!) than us and they didn’t want to ask them. Lastly, our orders came after 20 min later and the steaks were cold. The head waitress was visiting multiple times to other couple while no one was paying attention to us. The funny things was the “special” couple spent almost half compared to us 😀.

The "a Brasileira" is probably the most famous bar in Lisbona and offers an outside and inside area. The inside space is outstanding and takes you back to the old times. However, the bar offers only a limited choice of pastries but different types of breakfast. We had espresso and two different kinds of pastry, which both were good but not outstanding. Since this bar is very touristy and gets named in each guide, one needs patience to get a table inside. I noted that even if some tables were available, we had to wait for a long time to get seated. Further, the staff had the typical attitude of tourist restaurants: they were little friendly nor courteous. Additionally, they withdrew our cups and plates right after we had finished. This means that we have to pay and leave. To point out, this behavior is not typical for Portugal. To sum up, our stay could have been more enjoyable if the staff had been more courteous and attentive like the other bars or restaurants in Lisbona. Like any of my reviews, of course, this review is related to the type of restaurant, the restaurant's gastronomic objective, the overall gastronomic quality of the respective city, and the general context and needs to get compared to similar types of restaurants.

Amazing history and atmosphere! The coffee is good, but I’m an espresso drinker so I doubt it’s to everyone’s palette. The staff are lovely (especially if you follow direction and wait your turn!!) We had the set menu and we couldn’t be bothered thinking, it was a mistake. Top layer was delicious fresh fruit & dry Madeira cake. Next layer was processed or perhaps pressed ham (we’ve just come from Spain so our standards are now very high lol) flavourless processed cheese, packet smoked salmon which was fine with some limp lettuce. Bottom layer different breads. You could certainly spend more buying all the items individually. The weather was in our favour and we sat outside, don’t regret the spend, just choose food wisely! Edit: I’ve now been in Portugal a week and cheese here is tasteless and bland, the ham usually pressed and salami terrible. So the overall 3 stars will remain, but I’ve increased the food score overall, clearly those foods are how they are here!! So if you’re French, Spanish or even have a love of food, don’t order these items in restaurants here lol

It’s unfortunate to see that this name of good Pasteis de Nata has been tarnished by the poor service provided by the staff. Despite the good flavor of the Nata, waited for 10mn to be seated, then another 15mn before someone even notice we wanted to order. The blame is not to put on the usual waiters who were running due to the affluence, but rather the 2 head waiters / maître de salle whose only jobs is to place the customers on the table, wearing 2 brand suits but doing nothing than just showing off, walking around in the suit, and tell the clients to sit at a free table. Not even being responsible for helping nor telling the waiters what’s left to be done as he is supposed to have an eye on everything. Seriously 2 people for being head waiters and doing nothing apart from walking around and sticking their nose to their phones? We saw another table next to us, also very annoyed by that. Please review your staff… especially the younger ones who’s looking down on the other employees and the customers.
