I was looking for somewhere for lunch when out on my own in Lisbon recently and Restaurante D`bacalhau seemed to fit the bill. Looking out of the restaurant to all the greenery of the surroundings was great. The restaurant is low key in design and this is perfect for lunch in a big city. I was hungry and asked my waiter for recommendations. I couldn’t pick between two starts so ordered them, both. I chose the mix of codfish, shrimp and octopus with garlic and a codfish ball. The restaurant is renowned for the quality of their seafood and these starters showed the skill of the chef in preparing the food. While on the seafood theme, I saw a main course on the menu that I just had to taste. The Grilled codfish with potatoes in hot olive oil, garlic and onion was as good as it sounds. This is the perfect food when you are in Lisbon. It takes the local ingredients and marries them together. Makes me feel warm inside just thinking about it again! I recommend a trip to Restaurante D`bacalhau just to try this award winning dish. Along with the location and service, this makes it an amazing place to eat in the city. I still had room for dessert. After taking a little time to make my selection, I decided that the tarte de natas ice cream with berries was going to be the ideal way to finish this meal. It was just right – and I left satisfied.

It would've been a 5 star rating but the server didn't tell me that the bread basket and butter that he put on my table when I sat down was an additional cost. He nonchalantly put it at the table as I was sitting down to eat. I wouldn't have minded paying but you've got to communicate that there's a fee or simply ASK if I want it BEFORE putting it on the table as if it were complimentary. Give me the choice. He also didn't tell me the butter (the kind that come in the little square containers cost money (€1 each). I also asked about getting dessert for take away, he didn't mention there was a charge to do so. Lots of little unexpected charges that showwd up on the bill that could've been communicated earlier. Give me the option and let the customer decide. Feel a little taken advantage of. The food was delicious. I had cod with potatoes.

This place is very busy - there is a line of customers when they open, and it is difficult to get a table if you do not have a reservation. Those are normally indications of a popular and very good restaurant. So my wife and I wanted to try it out. We managed to get a table on our third try without a reservation. We got seated quickly, and then nothing happened for about 7-9 minutes. When a waiter finally got to our table we ordered drinks and food at once. Our wine was served shortly thereafter but the food got served after another 25 minutes wait. Meanwhile the restaurant got filled up. The wine was fine. The food did not impress us at all - actually we was not happy for it. My wife ordered the Risotto with vegetables, and I ordered a Bacalhau dish with spinach and potatoes. Both dishes were flavourless really lacking taste - a very big disappointment. As if this restaurant is living on its former glory, now focussing on quantity instead of quality. As if no one is tasting the dishes and ensuring taste before serving it to the customers. Furthermore the Bacalhau dish was full of fish bones - small as well as large - making half of the dish impossible to eat/enjoy. So - we are not eating here again and would not recommend people to eat there. And it is really strange as it seems like quite a few other people are happy dining here - so make up your own mind whether or not to visit.

Wow, the place was worth the visit. Found this restaurant by walking past and noticing how busy it was. We decided to eat there. From the start the staff was very accommodating to find a table for 5 during a busy period. Once seated the service was prompt. Ordered drinks which were promptly despatched to the table. The various fish dishes were brought out in a good time no long wait. However I feel the chefs need to get the timing of food delivery a bit right. One dish was nearly cold. The desserts were sublime and very fulfilling with flavours bursting in you mouth. The restaurant has a welcoming decor and relaxed atmosphere. Waiting staff were exceptional running around under pressure of a lunchtime rush and offering a superb service. Without them the restaurant would not rate as well. Price wise was reasonable for the dishes.

The food was quite good and the super soft octopus is the main reason I am keeping this is as a 4, because from a service perspective it didn't seem great. A lot of people around but no one would actually pay attention when we tried calling them. It felt a bit catered to tourists in that sense; sometimes it didn't show the care that restaurants that expect you back will. But this was just from an attention perspective because when they did come over they were incredibly nice and even came to check on our starters and asked whether they could start serving the main course; which was a nice touch. All in all it seems like a good place to come try a lot of Portuguese dishes, mostly made of cod, but other options available too. The outside seating is just lovely in the summer. The octopus is a must.

Sadly my worst experience in lisbon so far as my food was missing from a set and they only give me a discount. I dont need a discount but want to try the food. I order patingas set and was given patais de bachaulau. They told me it was the same but i doubt so. 3 piece of Patingas with rice is not the same as 3 piece of patais de bacahlau. I thought it was the starter in my set but it seems not. For the mistake they ask me what i want i say just serve me the missing food but they give me 2 euro discount. But after 1.5h here im done! They did compensate me with a coffee but the experience was still 1 star for me. I must admit whatever was serve was good but the mix up and the solution they gave was horrible.
