O Cofre — Restaurant in Lisbon

There is a strip of restaurants in a row here, in front of Alfama, mainly catering to tourists. Coming from the main square this is the furthest, so the others usually pick up the tourists, which is a big mistake as this is by far the best (I stayed in an apartment above the others and tried them all). The others are overpriced with small portions and forgettable taste. This is by far the most authentic Portuguese food, and the traditional chef with a barbecue grill, is visible to all the outside seats through a big window. The food was great and lots of it - not everywhere will do grilled chicken but this did and was the best I had. Prices fair too.

Service was slow even though the place was practically empty around 4pm and food was mediocre. Shrimps were poorly seasoned, you couldn’t really taste the garlic which seemed to be the only spice, no hints of herbs at all. There was a fair amount of them at least, but it was still far from the best dish ever. I had the sardines which were decent but nothing special. We had issues with getting sparkling water, the waiter bought us a bottle that had no visible bubbles whatsoever and tasted like sparkling water two days past opening the bottle and not closing it properly. Food was nice we ordered the fish sharing platter as well as the meats and cheese, olives and bread tapas to start. The tapas was nice, exactly what you would expect. Our fish was also good- obviously don’t order if you aren’t willing to debone everything. However the waiter continually messed up the bill, bringing it to us then saying no no and taking it back to add something else to it. When we sat down we were given a bowl of olives and some bread- we thought this shouldn’t have been on the bill as we did not ask for or order it, however we paid it.
