Imagine you’re wandering through the sun-drenched, cobbled streets of ancient Lisbon. You’ve just climbed the legendary seven hills (at least it feels like seven), and you finally reach the majestic Cathedral of Sé — Lisbon’s oldest church, standing proud since 1147. History! Beauty! Tradition! You’re practically weeping with cultural fulfillment.
But alas, your stomach growls. You’re famished. Naturally, you seek out a traditional Portuguese restaurant to match the grandeur of this sacred site. Enter Restaurante da Sé. The name alone whispers promises of bacalhau, caldo verde, and all the delights of Portugal’s rich culinary heritage.
You sit. You order. And then… disaster. Betrayal on a biblical scale. What is this on the menu? Paella? PAELLA!?
Like a slap in the face with a soggy Spanish sardine, the truth hits you: this is not a shrine to Portuguese cuisine — it’s a tourist trap in Iberian disguise, serving Spanish dishes in the shadow of Lisbon’s most iconic church. Run by foreigners, no less. The irony!
To call it “Comida Portuguesa” and serve paella is nothing short of culinary heresy. For shame. Delete from...
Read moreWe came here on a whim after having to find a last minute restaurant to support our large party! The servers were very gracious in finding a spot for us all to sit together and not having to separate us all which was very nice!
The ambiance of the restaurant was nice, we sat outside right by the Sé de Lisboa! it was a bit cold but we made due with the seating!
The food was good! Definitely a great place to bring folks that are first timers to Portugal or need introductions to the cuisine of the country as they have many options to choose from.
I cannot comment on all of the food we had at the table but from the 2 dishes that i had, the Bacalhau com natas and the garlic shrimp they were both very good and i would get them again. I do know many of the others who ordered also enjoyed their food as well so maybe a testamate of the quality of the meals.
Overall this would be a great place to go if you are on vacation and you would like some Portuguese food close to...
Read moreI don't usually write reviews, but I feel compelled to do so for this restaurant because I don't understand all the good reviews about "authentic Portuguese food" at all. We ordered Bacalhau à Brás, Bacalhau à Minhota, and Arroz de Marisco, and we were very disappointed. As Portuguese, we've never tasted these dishes so bland. The fish was unsalted, even though Bacalhau is usually a bit salty. It felt like our dishes had been pre-cooked and just reheated. We sat right next to the kitchen window on the terrace and didn't hear any cooking noises, just hammering.
We also ordered a Sangria for €20 made with white wine. The Sangria tasted awful, just like cheap white wine. When I asked what wine they use, they said, "our house wine"....
The waiters, all of Indian descent, didn't speak Portuguese. In summary, we wouldn't recommend this restaurant for authentic Portuguese food because it simply doesn't live up...
