A Hidden Gem Just a Stone’s Throw from Miradouro de Santa Catarina!
After a soaking in breathtaking views of Lisbon at the Miradouro de Santa Catarina, my friends and I walked down the street 5 minutes to arrive at Taberna Meia Porta. This charming restaurant greets you with a rustic vibe that instantly makes you feel at home, surrounded by decor that whispers tales of old Portugal while offering a warm, inviting atmosphere.
The staff at Taberna Meia Porta could not have been more welcoming, combining professionalism with a personal touch that makes you feel like a valued guest at a family gathering. They were attentive, friendly, and genuinely passionate about making our dining experience memorable.
The food was nothing short of spectacular, served hot and fresh in an "eat as it's prepared" style that added an exciting twist to our meal. It felt as though we were dining in the home of a Michelin-starred chef who decided to cook for his friends for the evening. Each dish was a delightful surprise, arriving just as we were ready for more. We decided to be adventurous and tried nearly every appetiser on the menu - each one was a masterpiece of flavour.
Not only was the food exceptional in taste and presentation, but the value for money was also outstanding. Considering the quality, quantity, and the variety of dishes we enjoyed, the prices were incredibly reasonable.
Taberna Meia Porta is more than just a restaurant; it's a culinary experience that I would recommend to anyone looking for a taste of authentic Portuguese hospitality and gourmet cuisine at its best. Whether you're a local or a visitor in Lisbon, make sure to add this spot to...
Read moreWe descended upon Taberna Meia Porta amidst a warm spring night in Lisboa. The name of the restaurant means half door and it was a little hidden as it blended into the structure of the building.
We were the first guests to enter. Three young gentlemen, chiseled like Colombos Sailors to the promised lands, greeted us. The restaurant is small, and tables are distributed unevenly - with some round and other rectangular. We were seated onto a sharing table - with beautiful blue tiles distributed on the wall.
The menu is Portuguese, with around 5/6 starters and 4 mains, and 3 desserts. My wife and I went for the bread and olives, crab croquettes, tuna skewers, cod baccalhau, and shrimps. All of the food is quite generous relative to the price point.
The bread was soft, rich in flavour and when combined with my hunger and the butter, it turned out to be a much needed relief. This relief was followed by some crab croquettes which left a strong taste of the ocean - not sure I would go for it again.
At this point, the restaurant was slowly filling up, and my wife and I were not the only ones. An Asian American duo joined us on the table and had some shrimps which caught our attention.
Shortly after, we received the tuna skewers in picapau sauce. It was rich in flavour and the tuna portion was large. Little grilled onions added a dash of taste.
The cod baccalau was decent but I am not sure it suited me taste buds. The chips were crisp and tasty.
My personal highlight were the shrimps - which appeared to be marinated in a rich olive oil and flour combo.
Dinner was closed with Chocolate Mousse. It was good - nothing to...
Read moreCannot overstate how much I love this spot—I went twice with my boyfriend on our trip, the second time being our last meal before flying home because I knew this place would deliver. It’s my platonic ideal of a restaurant. Cozy and thoughtful interior, smaller menu, delicious and unfussy food. And such wonderful service! We didn’t get her name, but our server was the best. Kind and attentive.
Menu highlights were the “lettuce anchovies” (light from the lettuce but umami from the anchovies; much needed after some of the heavier things we’d been eating) and the tuna skewers. I would drink the sauce that came with the tuna skewers; we asked the chef what was in it but you’ll have to try it and ask yourself :) I’m originally from San Diego and my boyfriend is from Hawaii, so a little picky with our seafood. Tuna skewers don’t typically jump off the menu at us, but these are a must order. Also any of the desserts. We had the sweet cold rice pudding with cinnamon and the almond cake with custard, but spied another table getting the chocolate mousse, which came topped with cherries and served in a pretty little silver coupe. Truly no misses....
