Welcome to the neighborhood! For the last few months, Sarah and I have watched the construction progress in the vacant space at the prime spot on the corner opposite Chiado’s Teatro da Trindade, and just a couple days ago things seemed to be shaping up nicely as we walked by. The door was open, so of course we asked when they would be opening, and they all grinned and said “NOON!” As it turned out, we wasted two more days before finally grabbing a table for lunch at Taqueria do Chiado and we couldn’t be more delighted we finally stopped in! We started with a Michelada, a beer with lime juice in a tall glass with a salted rim, and it was the perfect refresher for a sunny day in Lisbon. But the true magic was of course the tacos! Sarah tried the Corvina (fish taco) with a sub of jalapeño mayo since she can’t eat the intended sauce with coentro (cilantro) so chef Manuel graciously worked his charm with the delicate white fish, on a gently crisped tostadita for a perfect combination of flavor and crunch. I went for the traditional El Pastor with spicy mayo and tiny bits of pineapple to sing harmony for the tender pork on the soft tacos. Our expat friend, Kevin, who just moved here after several years in China and India, joined us and loved the costillitas tacos with a rich sauce that demanded to be scooped up with a spoon once the tacos had vanished. The vibe was friendly and it was great to watch chef and his assistant deftly finish the dishes using a culinary torch in the open kitchen area for just the right touch! The owners also operate Espada, in nearby Cais do Sodré and we have of course added that one to our list. So, head for Taqueria do Chiado soon: great location, enthusiastic staff, magical tacos, what’s not to love? Highly...
Read moreFood was very tasty. There was egg in one of the dishes and the white part of the egg was runny/raw. I assume this part is suppose to be cooked but maybe in Mexican or portuguese cuisine they eat the white part of the egg raw but it's not suppose to be like that where I'm accustomed to. However that dish still taste amazing. Dessert was really unique. Service was really really slow. I noticed they had 1-2 servers but also it took us a long time to get a simple guacamole and chips that sat at the cooks table. They could have served them to us a lot earlier but I would say we waited about 20 mins to get the chips. Then it Took another long time to get our second meal, then even more long time to get 3rd and 4th meal. We got the combo meal so we couldn't just leave once the first dish came out. otherwise we would of paid for the first dish and left. Took way too much time per dish to come out. Maybe management needs hire more staff. Staff looked to be...
Read moreTaco place - well let’s say it this way: if they interpret making Tacos there own way and not pretend these are Mexican Tacos, than this place is ok. So from my point of view and accompanied by a Mexican to this place these are ok in there own recreation of. taco but far away from a real Mexican Taco. Don’t get me wrong - the food taste good and we had Magaritas that we’re also ok. So taking this in account why only 4 stars? Well to start with the tortillas we’re out of wheat not corn and not self made, than they were not roasted but right out of the box on the plate, the filling was good in its own interpretation of a taco. The second topic is the price - for six not very big Tacos and two margaritas we paid 35,-€ - so I call this no Fantasy prices but clearly on the higher upper level for such food. At the end as always this is a matter of taste - so I encourage everyone to make there own evaluation if the price does not...
