Restaurante Fernando — Restaurant in Matosinhos

We had a wonderful dining experience here last night. The owner & staff were attentive and helpful. They gave me a gooseneck barnacle to try when they saw me looking at the seafood display, & were very understanding that we didn’t speak Portuguese. Instead, they did their best to communicate in English & it was a lovely, friendly exchange. We had clams (briny, succulent) with buttery grilled toast, seafood rice (stuffed with seafood with a delicate fresh tomato base) & housewine (crisp, balance & a generous pour). The portions were so generous we barely finished, & the total bill came to just €60 for 2 diners. What a great value experience that I’d recommend without hesitation. Restaurante Fernando is a no-nonsense place to enjoy fresh fish and seafood. Unpretentious but genuinely tasty. Even without a reservation, the team was exceptionally kind and made space for us — though reservations are definitely recommended.

The menu is straightforward and depends on the day’s catch, which you can see displayed before ordering. Staff are friendly, hardworking, and impressively quick for such a busy spot. If you’re unsure what to choose, trust their recommendations — they know their fish.

The house wine paired perfectly with our selection of grilled fish, and the grilled sardines made a great start to the meal.

Come for the fish, apparently that's what my 4year old says. She doesn't normally eat fish well but here an oven baked white fish with roasted potatoes goes down like a charm... We're go there at least once a month. Unfortunately no sunny terrace and no divider between smokers and non smokers (ask for a table at the front if that irritates you as much as us and let Fernando know). Deserts are nothing special, leave and go take a walk down the garden to the right that takes you to the beach and have an ice cream. Order your oven baked fish (and tomato rice!)...
