Restaurante O Xarroco — Restaurant in Matosinhos

Stopped by Xarroco for a fish soup, some wine and a light bite, at the dawn of summer. The sun was still warming the deck, and I sat outside, ready to embark on what I hoped would be a pleasant culinary voyage.

I tried throwing some friendly signals at the crew - chitchat, a smile - but they didn’t seem to pick up on my frequency. I lingered over the menu, clearly adrift, but no lifeline was tossed my way. You know that sound of an engine trying to start and it coughs and wheezes, but then just… nothing. That was the vibe. The ship stayed docked. And that’s when you start to suspect this cruise might not be what you hoped for.

The food? Seaworthy enough. Tasty, though not a revelation. Prices sailed a bit close to the premium end. Meanwhile, across the street, the other ship was packed to the brim, passengers queueing eagerly to board.

All in all, three stars. One dropped for the high tide on the bill, one for the frosty crew. Xarroco didn’t sink, but it didn’t exactly...

Wir sind hier auf Empfehlung unseres Guides hin. Da wir richtig Appetit auf Fisch hatten wurde uns gesagt, seien wir hier mit üppigen Portionen sehr gut bedient. Leider war es ein absoluter Reinfall... Wir waren zu viert und hatten grossen Hunger. Wir haben diverse Vorspeisen bestellt, darunter eine Suppe. Eine Kellnerin wollte uns dann fragen, ob wir Brot und Oliven haben wollen, wurde hier aber direkt von einem Ober weg gewunken. Ohne Bestellung haben wir dann Brot, Oliven und Pasten auf den Tisch bekommen, was wir nicht angenommen haben- da nicht bestellt. Als Hauptspeise haben wir zwei gemischte Fisch Platten bestellt. Eine "normale" und eine 10 Euro teurere mit Garnelen und Tintenfisch. Diese hat dann 39€ gekostet. Auf dem Foto sieht man die "Premium" Platte für 2 Personen!!! Die Platte wurde so fotografiert, wie sie gekommen ist! Auf der anderen waren die 2 Garnelen und die 2 Mini Tintenfischteile nicht drauf, aber genau so eine Mini Portion. Also haben uns diese 2 Garnelen und Tintenfischteile 10 Euro mehr gekostet. Die Fische waren teilweise verkohlt und sehr schlecht ausgenommen und nicht richtig sauber gemacht. Ebenso versalzen und alles kam lauwarm an. Zwischendurch fragten wir nach der bestellten Suppe, die bisher nicht kam. Da die Teller um uns herum anders aussahen fragten wir nach, ob das wirklich Platten für 2 Personen sein sollten, was bestätigt wurde. Pro 2 Personen Platte gab es 5 kleine Kartoffeln in Knoblauch Öl und eine kleine Portion Kohl. Hungrig fragten wir dann nochmal nach der Suppe. Da nichts kam, orderten wir die Rechnung. 96€ sollten wir dann bezahlen. Auf der Rechnung stand natürlich die nicht bekommene Suppe. Wir ließen dann den Chef kommen und erklärten unseren Unmut. Er sagte, man dürfe ja auch nicht an einem Sonntag essen gehen, da hier viel zu viele Leute für seinen kleinen Laden kommen und er ungelerntes Personal am Grill hat. Als wir sagten, dass das doch nicht das Problem des Gastes ist und es solch miserable Mini Platten unansehnlich Fisch gibt zeigten wir das Foto von unserer "2 Personen" Platte. Tja, ist halt so. Andere Gäste bekommen halt andere Platten, je nach dem wer gerade was grillt. Wenn wir noch Hunger hätten, könnten wir auch noch Fisch bestellen. Er hat noch reichlich...

Really dissapointed with service. Asked many times for drinks as child was thirsty. When received starters I asked again. Then third times. Then received soup, still no drinks. I asked the so called manager. We ask for a bottle of water, a juice and a glass of water nothing special. Waiter said have only different flavour of juice we didnt mind. But even that he didn't have. To figure out this it took about 25 minutes and multiply askings Fish / squid was cold and way to salty. Squid was not well grilled. We got a bill with the juice we have never received but charged. Seriously I have never gave 1 star rating to any restaurant but this was simple an awful experience. Busy time (saturday evening) is not an excuse for this...
