4.4/5*
The francesinhas had a thick and tender sirloin steak inside, being cooked nicely rare. They also had the expected ham and chorizo, both being smokey, salty and fatty. The cheese on top was thick and bold in flavour, like an aged cheddar. These francesinhas differ from others as they possess thicker ingredients. They paired gorgeously with the iconic, rich, spicy-tomato, beer-port wine- francesinhas sauce, which was done in a dominant-tomato-savoury style. We don’t particularly prefer this version of the sauce over the usual tangy, more beer-port influenced sauces. The bread utilised in these francesinhas was fresh and circular with a slight crust and soft interior.
The prego sandwiches, too, utilised rare sirloin steaks which were generous in their thickness. The bread used was fluffy, soft and fresh. The sauce on the sandwich had a beautiful garlic-mustard flavour, which further accentuated the beautiful flavour in the rarity of the steak.
The bacalhau cappachio was amazing, fresh and full of salty yet fresh-cod flavour. Paired with parsley, onion and a very light vinegar, the delicate flavour of bacalhau was perfectly presented to the palate.
The wrapped Zucchini-smoked salmon and ricotta was a very unique entree. The smoked salmon took the lead with its beautifully fresh, melting and of course, Smokey taste. The soft zucchini wrapped around the piece, presented itself as a teaser for the softer and creamy ricotta on...
Read moreWhat happened to you Pregar??? I waited all year to return and continue my fun and eating great food. Wow! How the mighty have fallen! This is truly sad news!! The food is still amazing but the staff ruin any chance they have at being great. If you are a Foreigner or non local you get treated very badly now and they straight up lie to your face! One waiter that's been there a long time told us the tap water was not drinkable in porto and then refused to bring us water. He intentionally forgot our drinks and food for a long time and never returned to help. While other people that spoke Portuguese were helped flawlessly. I understand this is their country but where is the Portuguese pride? Where is the pride of being a good person? Where are the old management team? The place was so much better in the past. It makes me sad to say but you should avoid this place at all costs. There is better food in porto as the food scene has grown so much. Have you had the RIBS restaurant yet? If not you need to. Pregar should take classes from them to see what true customer service is like. As much as I like the food here the staff make everything sour. You can get a sparkling sangria anywhere in porto as well as their best sandwich. I will be spreading the word to all my people in the states that I have convinced to come eat here over the past 3 years that this place is now a waste of...
Read moreAround the corner from my apartment is this little gem of a restaurant that never fails to satisfy. Start with getting a table...RESERVE AHEAD. It's packed, constantly, 7 days a week. Next, ask to be seated in TIAGO's area. He is THE BEST. HOW he manages 10+ tables at the same time is amazing...and NEVER gets it wrong. PREGAR is a steak sandwich shop (with fantastic appetizers, great cocktails...the chef nails it every time). Nothing more, nothing less. Think filet mignon seared to perfection, with grilled (carmelized) onions, cheese, or practically anything you want to add if it's in their fridge. The horseradish sauce a fav, all on a homemade Portughese bun. TIAGO somehow manages to get your drinks, your meal out piping hot as if you are the only patrons in the entire place. And, without a reservation, he will move mountains to try to get you in as soon as possible. It is no wonder that after four years of living here I've seen as many as 20-25 people (without reservations) patiently waiting. It's that good. Not a meat eater, they have chicken and fish as well, but there are times when a medium rare filet burger is craved. And PREGAR is the only spot I know that delivers with such consistency and finesse. Under 20€ a person with batata fritas plus a drink. Seriously? RUN here when nothing but a perfectly portioned piece of meat will do--lunch, snack or dinner....
