We are staying st Portobay Teatro Hotel for 3 nights on our Great Rail Journeys tour of Portugal and the Duoro. Our first night we enjoyed our tour group dinner in Il Basilico Porto so much, that my husband and I booked dinner here again tonight. We were so well taken care of by Anna, an extremely friendly gal with a wonderful demeanor and big smile. She spoke perfect English, and she was very attentive and made sure we were satisfied with our meals. We sure were! We enjoyed the bread, grissinis, olives and olive oil, the Caprese salad, and my husband enjoyed the fish with potatos, sun dried tomatoes and peppers in a spicy red sauce. I do not eat fish, but ate the veggies and potatoes in the sauce. Anna noticed and offered to bring me a different entree. I sure appreciated her sweet offer, but told her I was stuffed. Both the white and red wines were very delicious! Tonight we are looking forward to trying other items on the menu at II Basilica Porto, and of course, more of the wine. We requested Anna as our server, so we are assured of enjoying another wonderful dining experience! II Basilica Porto is very lucky to have her! PS- We just finished our dinner tonight. We ordered the margarita pizza for me, and the fish stew for my husband. Anna recommended both, bless her heart! Once again, we were thrilled with our meals. We hope you try this...
Read moreLovely restaurant, disappointing service, good food. Came for my 30th birthday as we love the Il basilico in Madeira. Unfortunately this one was disappointing. Started off well with colouring pictures for our child but we had put in the booking that we needed a high chair and despite asking twice more one never showed up (we weren't told there wasn't one either which would've been fine) so had to hold our toddler the whole time which isn't relaxing. People who had arrived after us got served before us and we were on a deadline with a toddler. We weren't offered water (fyi it's not free) like others were. Partner was gluten free which we mentioned on the booking and the waitress wasn't very helpful with this either, please put allergens on your menu as it makes us not want to come!! Food luckily came quickly but no one checked if we were enjoying it. Didn't hang around for pudding given the poor service and then ended up being given the wrong bill! Unsure if the staff are new or we got unlucky. A shame given our previous experiences...

After receiving the bill I gave the waiter 50 Euros cash on a 39 Euro tab. He came back with one Euro, dropping it quickly on the table and scurrying off about his way. Moments later, I asked him to confirm I gave him 50 Euros. He confirmed and said he assumed 10 Euros was his tip.
I understand the tip is more or less included in many EU countries, including Portugal. The pricing includes the tip but I typically leave 15% to be extra generous. However, I resent the waiter taking a 25% tip. He knew damn well what he was doing! I should have asked for my 11 Euro change and left.
The EU employees should appreciate American visitors tipping extra and not seek to take advantage of...
