I visited in September and was disappointed to be affected by the bedbug issue they had at that time. I only saw recent Google reviews about the issue when pulling up Google maps to make the drive north, so it was too late to cancel our reservation. Despite my hesitation to stay I asked the front desk about it when checking in around midnight, exhausted from driving, and was reassured the problem had been addressed and I would be placed on a different floor from where the issues occurred.
Within seconds of getting into our room we saw bedbugs. Understand these things happen but I was disappointed in how management handled it - unwilling to give us another room or refund our stay so we could move hotels without losing money. When I showed the gentleman working at the front desk a photo of the bedbugs that I took on my phone, he accused me of finding the photo on google images. You can literally see furnishing in the background of the photo that matches that of their rooms. Completely rude and unprofessional. I spent an hour in the lobby going back and forth between the hotel and Booking.com on the phone to seek a refund but eventually gave up and moved hotels. Ruined our arrival to Porto but we moved to Paris Hotel around the corner which was...
Read moreA very top located hotel to reach by both metro and train easily. You can view the hotel as soon as you leave the Sao Bento metro station. The lateral entrance of Sao Bento train station is just across the hotel as well. You can even leave your room and catch the train departing to Braga in ten minutes. Porto is quite a hilly city, therefore an accommodation next to public transportation stations is priceless. Nevertheles, almost everything of touristic importance is within walking distance to Hotel Peninsular. You can even reach the scenic Luis 1 Bridge and the Villa Nova de Gaia bank of the Douro River with a short downward walk. As for the hotel, it is a bit old and somewhat gloomy, but elegantly decorated. Our room was spacious and comfortable with air conditioner, TV set, mini bar and a safe. It was a pleasant surprise to find both a jacuzzi tub and a shower in the bathroom. Breakfast was good enough and was served in a classy hall. I certainly recommend Hotel Peninsular. As a last note, if you'll reach from the airport by metro, be sure to purchase an Andante Card and charge it with a title of Z4 trip ticket and make a switch to D (yellow) line...
Read moreSince the first moment we booked this hotel, we have received some messages from them to ask for extra money for everything. Theis first message wasn't kind of "thanks for booking" but it was "Extra beds and extra people have an additional cost of €20 per person per night plus €2 tourist tax". The price we paid was inclusive of breakfast and tourist tax. Another message was a reminder to pay the tax upon arrival. Finally, we asked for some gluten-free bread for breakfast (celiac is a disease, not a choice!) and they replied saying "6 euro for having gluten-free bread" (the bread costs just 2 euro!). Furthermore, we received another message saying "the hot water for breakfast costs 2 euro". Despite this, we decided not to cancel the reservation because we only had to stay one night and then we would have brought our gluten-free bread. A the end, Ryanair didn't allow us to depart for a covid situation, so we have cancelled the entire trip. This hotel was in no way willing to come to meet us. We didn't want a refund, but at least a voucher! Trust me, avoid this hotel. For the same price, you can find nicer and more hospitable...
