We stayed in a spacious and clean double room 413 with ensuite bathroom and aircon. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was large and modern enough. At €100 a night it was relatively good value for money especially given the incredible location. Reception was 24 hours and the staff were lovely. Nice bar on site serving very reasonably priced drinks until 2am. They had a TV showing sports, loads of board games and books. The atmosphere in the common area was great with a friendly buzz all around. If you're into hostels you will love this place. Make sure to do all the pre-check in online like we did. It meant that the check in when we arrived took 1 minute and off we went into the night! :D
Unfortunately our room right above the reception suffered from a serious sound insulation issue. We could hear the music from reception ALL the time. It was never turned off completely despited us asking. And it was definitely from reception and not from some nearby nightclub like staff suggested at some point. You could hear the tunes clearly, day and night. And we checked - it was the same song you could hear in our room and one minute later in the reception when we went to check. This was a speaker installed under the ceiling of reception, exactly where the corner of our room was. Of course during the day it was not a problem cause we were not there but at night it was a major hassle despite using proper pharmacy-grade earplugs.
Out of three nights we spent there, two nights were a nightmare and we had to go to reception (or call the reception) in the middle of the night to ask them to turn down the music which helped enough for the earplugs to work. But both nights we were exhausted and in the morning the music would be back on to normal volume so our rest was cut short. On the last night we gave up and just suffered through cause we were getting up at 4am to go to the airport anyway. Having aircon on full blast helped mask the sounds a little even though we didn't need it.
We reported the issue to reception on the first night, at 2.30am, and then again during the day, and the staff were really lovely and understanding but the problem wasn't really addressed. There were no other rooms available on higher floors for us to move. We considered leaving and booking somewhere else and we should have. Three nights of very little rest impacted our trip a lot more than...

Read moreI had reserved a bed in an 8 female dorm for 7 nights at a cost of almost $300 euros, in the Nice Way Hostel in Porto. I arrived Aug 6 at 8:00 a.m. that first day, having come on an overnight bus from Spain. Gabriela was at the front desk and told me I could not check in till 3:00. I spent the next 7 hours in the lobby until I noticed that she was checking in others who had come in after me, so I went and got a place in line. She said nothing at the time but when I got to the room she had booked me into it was a tiny private family room with the two main beds 12 inches apart from each other, 2 pull down bunks overhead, no privacy curtains and only two lockers.
I went back to her and said there must be a mistake, I had booked a 8 bed female dorm, with curtains. It was being renovated she said, so not available. You didn't know it was going to be renovated I asked? She shrugged.
She said if I didn't like my "upgrade" she would give me back my money and I could go find another hostel. But how would I ever find a hostel in August, that same day, for a week? She shrugged.
I said I'd be ok if I had to change rooms at some point. No, she said, fully booked, nothing available. I said what about mixed dorms. No she said. Everything is fully booked during the whole 7 days of my stay.
I'd been living in dorms all over the world for the last 12 months, and that did not make any sense, or seem possible, so I waited till shift change, and was rewarded by working with Giovanni. Within 4 minutes Giovanni had me moving into a female dorm room for the last 5 days of my stay. The hostel was great. Great location, great social set up, lots of bathrooms and showers, perfect vibe. But for some reason they have that one staff member who chooses when to be helpful and when to block/ control. If you meet her, just wait it out, everyone else was great. Worth noting, the hostel did let guests in their room early, if their bed was vacant the night before. My first room bed was vacant the night before...
