Mare Nera Seafood Restaurant — Restaurant in Cluj Metropolitan Area

We decided to go to this restaurant because of the nice reviews and pictures found online. We always postponed it but finally made it. Arrived around 20:10 as the restaurant is closing at 22:00, we get to order our food quite fast, from a really competent, nice and professional waitress. She warns us that it might take 35-40min. No worries, we’re excited. We received a complementary spreadable fish with a lot of bread. Smart move. 21:30, I see almost everyone leaving from the restaurant when I ask the waitress when we’ll… ‘in 2 min’… we got our plates 10 min after that.. but only one as they ‘mixed up the orders’. In exchange they offered us some good shrimps while waiting for the plate ordered. The first plate of pasta that was supposed to weight 550 g (with the shells of course) seemed really small. We finally get our missing plate, and I ask to take it away as it was late. The portion given was way too small. Overall the taste is okay, the waitress very nice but God how long was it to receive two portion of pasta.. Maybe we came the wrong day but still...

Give it a try but maybe ask first for the server’s recommendation. I went for lunch and had the two person sharing platter of mixed seafood. The fish, we chose bream, was tasty, well cooked and filleted at the table. The serving was good and the staff were very attentive and professional. Unfortunately the overall produce, calamari, baby squid, potatoes happened to be on this day the average tasteless frozen ones. I would have liked for the calamari rings to have had the tougher outer skin better removed and the giant calamari tentacles to have been a bit more tender. The recommended house sauce was nothing special, could not taste the olive oil. In contrast the grilled mussels and shrimp were tasty even if the latter were a bit overcooked. The outdoor area is amazing, the atmosphere and music complete de ambience. The staff is amazing and very friendly. Now the most important thing, the food. We visited this place in the spring, we got the seafood platter and it was good, but nothing out of the ordinary. We visited again this evening and got the same platter, and 2 sides of zuccini and asparagus. Oh my taste buds! I don't know if the changed the cook/chef or if it's the same cook/chef but it was the best seafood I tasted in Cluj so far.
