Visiting the Steampunk Museum in Cluj was a surprising and fascinating experience, far beyond what I expected. I had only known steampunk through movies and stories, as an aesthetic filled with gears, brass, and Victorian dreams projected into a future that never was, but seeing it up close is something else entirely.
The feeling you get as soon as you step inside is that you’ve suddenly entered a secret workshop, where imagination meets mechanics. Strange and bizarre machines, almost poetic in their practical “uselessness” but rich in imagination, welcome you as if they were relics from an alternative future. Every gear seems to tell a story, every lever or piston carries the taste of an adventure never written.
What impressed me the most, however, wasn’t just the exhibition itself, but discovering that much of what’s on display doesn’t come from some international collection: it was created right there by a young man who works at the museum. In his workshop, he shapes objects, assemblies, and replicas, producing unique pieces or reinterpretations of inventions that exist elsewhere. What surprised me was the passion he conveys: it’s not just about reproducing an aesthetic, but about keeping it alive, making it breathe in the present.
After all, steampunk is not just a “visual style.” It’s an imaginative world that bridges past and future, nostalgia for the Victorian era with the vision of a technology that never saw the light but could have existed. Looking at those objects, I realized they are not just exhibits: they are small provocations, open windows onto what our world might have become if the age of steam had been pushed to its limits.
In the end, the Cluj museum is not just a collection, but a living place that leaves you with a sense of wonder and curiosity. You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy it: you only need to let yourself be carried away, like when we were kids watching adventure films and dreaming of impossible machines. For me, it was a visit that mixed fun and surprise, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to discover something unusual, away from the classic...
Read moreOn my recent trip to Romania there were a few places I had researched and looked at to visit and this was one of them.
The unique display and theme of utilising technology old and new and combining them into brand new works of art was intriguing to me and something I had to see with my own eyes.
As soon as you enter there is an amazing ambience and all the staff are in character to add to the amazing atmosphere of the place.
It feels like you’re on a journey of discovery, learning about the past as well as how it shapes and integrates into the future of today.
The story telling and demonstrations by the guides are amazing and being a British tourist in another country it was amazing to see that all the staff spoke English and Romanian giving that little bit extra to make your experience that much more enjoyable.
Even though a lot of the art pieces are very delicate, you get many opportunities to get hands on with some of the amazing creations on display. The guides will walk you through and show you how to use certain pieces and tell you about the inspirations behind them.
For me this venue symbolised the ability to utilise your imagination and create anything and everything that represents your personality and makes you unique.
Especially in modern times where every phone, car and bicycle looks the same, adding a personal touch of the smallest kind can help you express yourself and stand out in the crowd.
There’s also a workshop where one of the in house artists creates pieces for the museum and upon speaking to some of the guides it’s very popular for local children to come and demonstrate their creativity and ask questions to create their own art pieces.
Having an establishment where kids and adults alike can go and learn to express their creative minds is a great resource to have and I’m glad that places like this exist.
Overall I loved every second of this place and I highly recommend it to anyone with a creative mind if interest in something different. The staff alone are worth speaking to for if anything else as you’ll enjoy the stories they have...
Read moreSuch an incredible experience visiting this place, you open that door and you're not in Cluj anymore, it's like that wardrobe from Narnia, you enter a completely new world filled with magic, majority of it hand crafted by an extremely talented person or other very talented people and many old cool stuff that has been restored or left as is for preservation. I couldn't stop smiling the entire time I was there that's how fantastic and magical it really was (I'm not much of a smiler), I loved the (redacted) room as well, maaaaybe I woulda loved it more if little people didn't cause chaos but they're kids so it's okay, I went forward in time to 9999 in Minecraft, fun stuff. The workshop, the place where the magic is being crafted is just so amazing to look at, I'm jealous of the sheer talent and imagination that person has, I could never even if I tried hard to 😅 It was really hard to leave but it was almost closing time so sadly I had to say goodbye 😞 The guides were the nicest people I have ever met honestly, explained everything perfectly, even though I got lost in admiring and maybe missed a few details, that's on me but will most definitely come back on my next trip to Cluj, the girls were very nice wanted to hug them before leaving but they definitely went to craft some potions! The guys were super kind too, got my tarot read and not gonna lie it was almost spot on with everything happening in my life so that was a shocker And to the guy who took a picture of me with the scuba helmet, I WILL get my phone case !!😆 Stay awesome guys, really lifted my mood with this visit, can't wait to come back,
Yours...
