Train-Wreck Breakfast Give me a break, nothings runs fast here. Even though they are overstaffed they don’t get it done bringing a coffee within 30 minutes. You literally have to beg for placing your order. They refuse to take drinks and breakfast at once. Or they look annoyed or confused. Sometimes both. Waiter asked multiple times how we want our eggs and then don’t place the order. One dialog: Waiter: How do you like your eggs. Me: Omlette, please. Other Waitress after I got Scrambled Eggs: Omlette is not in our system. So is Service-Mentality. One of us had to leave without breakfast, after 45 minutes. If you are vegetarian: kitchen was not able to get rid of the bacon and replace it with avo. They can only add stuff. Waitress: Hope you enjoyed the breakfast. Me: Thank you, but no. Waitress: Hope to see you again Friend: Thanks, but no. At the end it was symptomatic: Card machine was not working. People who wanted to pay queued up. We, too. And no, it wasn’t just Murphys Law or we are too complicated guests. The whole Charles is a mess. And I simply have no idea why it is listed as one of the best Breakfast Locations of Capetown. This...

I cannot begin to express how incredible it is to dine at The Charles. I first discovered this place while visiting Cape Town for the first time in May 2023 and was greeted by Uthando's warm hospitality. Her hospitality and kindness were a great introduction and representation of the people of Cape Town. I had the caesar salad with chicken and avocado during that first visit and it is the best version of that salad I have ever had. I still reminisce about it to this day. Shortly before leaving, Uthando mentioned that I should return to try their scones with berry compote. Her words did not disappoint when I finally tried them a few days later. The hospitable experience is not exclusive to Uthando though, as everyone who is employed there is extremely kind and welcoming. I've returned to Cape Town twice since that first time in May and have visited The Charles multiple times throughout all of those visits. This should, hopefully, express how emphatically I will always recommend...

Had a horrible experience,

Have been here a few times - food does not dissapoint, staff super helpful and friendly - so my rating is not because of this reason.

I have been sitting here for 45 min in such a calming space and the manager so disrespectful towards her staff. Shame on you. To speak to any human that way - no matter what they do wrong. There is ways to deal with issues and how you dealing with it - is disgusting. You screamed on a lady called Lauren to fetch herbs upstairs and then one of the guys in your kitchen asking for help - and you told him rudely to go away - you just had a fight with somoen else and cant deal with him. You the manager... its your job!

Being bullied in my life and abused - this made me feeling stress in this beautiful spot. Shame on you for treating people so bad. I think you need some coaching how to treat your staff better to get the results you require - must better strategy than adressing them so badly.

Hope this reach...

Spent the afternoon at Cafe Charles a hidden garden in The Waterkant, located just across the street from Manhattan's. The offer a different variety of foods and baked goods on their menu. With a rooftop option it's perfect for a warm and sunny day in Cape Town. I enjoyed a Eggs Benedict with Smoked Hake which is a different twist but delicious and ended off my afternoon with a scone with cream and jam and it was honestly the best tasting scone I have had and I need to add that I've eaten scones across the globe but this was so tasty. A hidden garden in the city and perfect for lunch or breakfast. The service was good and the restaurant itself is really pretty for those perfect Instagram pics

Beautiful location. The upstairs area had some stunning vistas, although I could not sit there because there was just one waiter on duty. Nonetheless, the street seating is also an absolute joy with its beautiful indigenous Milkwood tree (providing lovely shade) and the serene sounds of water running from the fountain. I thought the coffee prices was a bit steep. I had a flatwhite for R35.00 (June 2021). This might have been okay in pre-Covid-19 times, but since tourists are far and few these days, I don't see how many locals will be happy to pay such prices. That said, the coffee was good. I also had a brownie - it was delicious, but (again) pricey.

Nice cafe- restaurant occupying a prime corner location with alfresco seating under the trees and up on the terrace. Located directly opposite Manhattans Cafe, it’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the de Waterkant village atmosphere. Service was super friendly and fast. The menu is great and includes some local specialties like Cape Malay curries, and bobotie, as well as regular items like burgers, salads, pies etc. They are only open for dinner 3 nights per week, but serve breakfast and lunch 7 days a week. We visited several times during our stay in de Waterkant for dinner and afternoon tea & scones.
