Scammy and a complete ripoff. I dined last night at Signature with my 3 friends and suffice to say i will never set foot at Signature ever again. I wouldn't recommend it either to future diners - hopefully they will read these reviews before deciding to give them their business.
On our arrival we ordered "a bottle of sparkling water for the table". Our waitress brought the water, poured it into our white wine glasses for us.....made sure not to show us the empty bottle or leave it at the table. I was with my sister and each of us had brought along a friend that was new to us as siblings (it was the first time i was meeting my sister's friend while they've known each other for years). So conversation kind of flowed easier between each sister-friend duo, our waitress seems to have read this dynamic and exploited it by bringing water refills we hadn't ordered. She refilled our water glasses cunningly and sneakily like 1 glass at a time, picking a glass of a person who was paying the least attention to her (waitress) while engaged in conversation and laughter at the table. Presuming that a 1l bottle provided 4 glasses of water, we never had more than 2 glasses refilled (without being ordered). When our bill arrived it had a charge at the top of "5xSparkling Water = R450" whereas we only ordered 1 bottle of water on our arrival. I hate that their waitress pulled this scam/daylight robbery on us. Its not even waitress issue, its the restaurant management who instruct and train their waiting staff on how to execute this dirty trick on unsuspecting diners. I can't give any compliments for anything else as this water-refill scam put a big damper on our entire evening. Im pretty sure the waitress added 2 bottles of water to our bill that she didn't open or serve us on her "sneaky water drop mission".
The food portions were tiny, overpriced and laden with cheap sides eg we ordered 2 x chimichurri ribeye steaks and they were served sliced up into finger sized slivers, spread a little to cover the plate to give off an illusion of size yet we were not fooled about the fact that the steak was neither a ribeye cut or bigger than 200g. Over 70% of our plate was filled with lentils, the cheap store bought R10 packet kind that comes dried, gets soaked in water, later boiled and is bland, tasteless and uninteresting. It was a terrible pairing which absolutely didn't work.
This restaurant and its R500 food minimum order per person excluding drinks rule is not worth it. I've had better dining experiences at Tashas, Paul, Hussar Grill at the same shopping center. For a good eating out experience that doesn't include tricks and scamming of your pocket give Signature a miss, rather go to Tashas, Paul or...
Read moreWe were disappointed, at fine dining prices we had much higher expectations.
We booked in advance and were asked if it was a special occasion – it was our 5 year anniversary – which we mentioned, in fact, I specifically requested that something special be done.
When we arrived (17h06) we noticed all of the waiters sitting at the customer tables at the entrance, having a big chat. We were greeted by a friendly admissions staff, and handed to Brain to seat us.
We sat by the window (probably mostly our fault but I would have liked advice that the sun shining through the thin drapes was hot and uncomfortable in an un-airconditioned room). Brain asked us if there was a special occasion (It would have been great if the woman who booked had made a note) – we explained, and Brain said they’d be making little something with a note on it for Mr. and Mrs. We clarified that we weren’t married but that it was our five year relationship anniversary. Mistake.
Brain was inattentive, but even worse, it was quite clear when he was around that he was far from trained for a fine-dining type experience. I’m not sure this was Brain specific – I had a couple of encounters with other waiters where this was made quite clear (ignoring customers because they’re in the middle of a riveting conversation with each other.) I walked past 2 waiters trying to get attention to find out where the bathroom was. Honestly, I’ve had better experience with enthusiastic Wimpy waiters.
Lovely bathroom, however, there was some broken equipment in the stalls, and the sinks are designed to splash water on your chest.
The starters were delicious, albeit a little cold. Mains were good, not great, and the desert was also good – nothing too special. Our anniversary was never mentioned again, and nothing was brought.
We won’t be returning. If the owner is interested, they need to send a high-level manager to supervise these waiters, and the waiters need training and to be held accountable. If the manager isn’t noticing anything wrong, send them on a company budget to another fine-dining experience (e.g. the Saxon hotel).
People seem to rave about this place on google, but we were really unimpressed. Good luck to the...
Read moreBeing my opportunity to surprise my husband to the most amazing dining out experience in Johannesburg. We were having the best evening from how we were received at the entrance to the where we were seated, the view was breathtaking and romantic. I was treating my hubby to a meal he would enjoy. My huge concern was when ordering our drinks, I had a sip of the Strawberry Mojito and I didn't like how it was made as no spritzer was added on it and I asked her to take it back and rather exchange to the original Mojito which was prepared perfectly, but she billed me for the item I was not happy with. My husband's choice (Shell fish) had SQ without the prize and we asked the waiter regarding pricing to better understand what the cost would be, but she insisted it's based on quantity and he would receive 5 of the selected but she didn't tell us what the value would be as we had requested . The previous times I have been at the restaurant, the waitress would provide an estimate of the cost, but our current waitress didn't tell us the estimation and the food was served. When we received the bill I was blown out of my seat and honestly taken aback as the dish with SQ equated my planned budget for our dinner. What was meant to be a surprise for my husband turned to involving him in helping out in settling the bill. We addressed the waiter that she didn't mention the prize and her response, "Is it", was honestly disconnected from how our experience was turned upside down. Our experience ended on a sour note due to prizes not being disclosed upfront. Also my experience is when you are not happy with how an item is prepared it's either corrected but to include an item which was sent back to the kitchen can not be correct. It seems that the waitress was either new or not well trained to deal with customer queries which ultimately had an unfavorable impact on our experience and I always sing praises about Signature to my family and friends but to experience it in this manner with the love of my life was honestly disappointing. I love Signature but my experience tonight was one I wish...
