After reading the reviews we were keen to eat at the Anchorage on our first night in Knysna. We made a booking for 19. Whilst traveling we realised we'll only make it at 19h20. We phoned ahead to alert them. On a request if corkage is allowed we received a short rebuff that they have a full license and that BYO with corkage is not allowed.
On arrival at the new arranged time the response was: "at last you've made It". I was very taken aback but didn't immediately react. I as sure that this must have been one of the employees. When we were tendered to by a waiter I enquired who the person was that received us and was very surprised to learn that she is a co-owner. The waiter immediately aplogised for her behavior and put it down to a long day for her.
We the prodeeded to order our drinks. After being told they are fully licensed, our first choice on the menu was not available. My wife ordered a linefish and calamari combo. The line fish of the day was hake. We regularly eat hake and it was clear that this was frozen hake served. My one daughter ordered 8 prawns, to be told that they don't have enough prawns. They did well to replace it with two LM giant prawns. From arrival to finally receiving ("at last") our food took 1h30m
Our waiter was excellent and constantly updated us on progress. Unfortunately this couldn't make up for the poor service received on reception or from the kitchen. This is not a budget meal and one would expect much more. I assume that we maybe just got them on a bad day post new year with stock outs.
Unfortunately this is a restaurant that won't...
Read moreExceptional service and food! My friend and I dined here for dinner in mid-August 2016. We were warmly welcomed at the door and were seated immediately at a table. Our server was friendly, playful and polite. He read our mood well. After recommending and serving an excellent wine, he guided us through the menu and special selections.
We ordered the mini seafood platter starter, an ostrich filet (on special) and a zebra filet (on special). The food was prepared and seasoned very well. The seafood was fresh and the filets were both juicy and tender. We finished with two lovely desserts. In all, dinner took about two hours start to finish.
Throughout, the service was great. Our server checked in several times to ensure we were comfortable and satisfied as well as to refill our wine glasses. Even after our meal was finished, the host and hostess went above and beyond to help us find a place to stay for the evening.
If I ever find my way back to Knysna, I hope to find this place exactly as it was. Until then, I'll be recommending it to my local friends and those traveling...
Read moreThe food was amazing!!
The decor of the restaurant doesn’t really correlate with the quality of the food. If you enter you get the feeling that “fish & chips” is their star dish (but that might be different for other people).
I had prawns as a starter and a chicken pasta for my main dish. I’ve had a lot of prawns in my life, but these were definitely in my top 5! Also the chicken pasta was sublime (even though it’s a seafood restaurant).
The staff, both the manager and our waiter, were very customer-friendly. The manager speaks English, Dutch, German and god knows how many languages more.. This makes for a very personal touch.
The only downside was the double espresso. It was very watery and the foam was really bitter. Perhaps something was up with the machine. The funny thing is, I was doubting to have the espresso because of going to bed soon after. So you could say it was not meant to be! 🤪
The total experience was lovely. Our food came accommodated by a lovely, price friendly...
