Pavilion Restaurant / Jackal on the Beach — Restaurant in George

EDIT: After a 2 year absence I decided to give this place another attempt. I'm very sad to report that standards seem to have gone backwards.

Basics are not right. Restaurant easy wins here are being missed and own goals are defeating the amazing potential of this location. The Jakkalsvlei brand is also at risk here and not run nearly as well as their Vineyard location outside Herbertsdale.

Food: Pizza bases are clearly pre-packaged, cheap salty crax like discs made in electric oven. A huge sin for the R130+/- price!

Most of the beers not in stock, none on tap in stock.

Service: Our waiter was friendly and generally on top of things but took 45 mins for the food to arrive (plate of chips, a classic foccacia and crumbed mushrooms which were also out of stock! Mushrooms out of stock!). We were 1 of 3 tables, any basically trained kitchen staff should be able to handle this in 15 mins or less. When I went to the bathroom I saw at least 3 kitchen staff so short staffing is not the problem here.

Wasn't surprised to see that there were no paper towels in the bathroom dispenser and the bin was over flowing. Another sign of lack of leadership.

Table across from us never cleaned during our entire 2 hour visit, stuff blowing off the tables onto the beach, food left out to attract seagulls.

It's so frustrating because with some basic training, leadership and minor changes this place could and should be amazing.

My experience here is reoccurring and not based on one bad day for these guys....

How to start? The restaurant is nice with a great location. But in our experience yesterday that was it. We were a group of 8 including kids and got our table outside. After 15 min no one could tell me who is our waiter nor could we get hold of some menus. After asking 3 different persons someone finally manage to take our order. And what then? 30 minutes later (!) we got our drinks. After 90 min and only after asking, the waitress came to tell us there are still a few orders before ours can even start to get prepared. After all this time the kids were super hungry and so were we. No apologies were offered nor some bread or similar to make the wait a bit more bearable. The only explanation we got was the restaurant was busy. Sorry but we have been to many restaurants around the garden route, all fully booked but with a way better service and faster and more respectful treat to patrons . Great location. Okay food. Everything else was a downright disgrace. We waited 15 minutes to place a drink order, 15 more minutes to place a food order and then well over an hour for our dinner. There was never more than 5 tables total in the restaurant at any given time we were there. The waitress did not check on us or ask about the drinks or food one single time after delivering them. Most importantly, if you are at all concerned about COVID, do not visit this restaurant. Not 24 hours after the president's latest remarks on the dire situation, almost every employee had masks around their chins - including the cooks who we watched prepare our food. The manager was asked about it and he shrugged and had no explanation as to why this was the case. He responded that 'hopefully' the cook would wear the mask in the future. We are visitors and got to town too late for any other dining options, otherwise we would have absolutely walked out of this...
