I judge a coffee shop firstly and most importantly on their espresso.
For those who may not know espresso is the basis of all milk drinks at a coffee shop. From cappuccino to latte to flat white and cortado they all begin with a shot of espresso.
Therefore if the espresso is bad I will not drink anything else from the establishment. Unfortunately African Roots served me a harshly sour and under-extracted shot of espresso. This is very strange to me as there was a lot of liquid in the cup, way more than one would expect in a double espresso.
Ultimately I was unable to appreciate the beans African Roots has on offer because their espresso recipe is fundamentally flawed.
That said I also ate a Salmon Eggs Benedict and it was a delight. The hollandaise was rich and creamy, the eggs were soft as silk and the bread was chewy crusty and just perfect.
My compliments go out the kitchen staff who prepared the meal as it was amazing!
However when a coffee shop cannot make a good cup of coffee i cannot recommend.
P.S For some reason at African Roots they seem to think pour over on ice means espresso with milk "poured over" ice. Please just google coffee...
Read moreMost underwhelming experience! The iced coffees we began with, were absolutely disappointing. We then had prawns on a bed of rice, lamb chops, chicken wings, steak (which we had to send back as it was overcooked & way too salty), and chips which were again over seasoned & too salty. All of the above-mentioned were drenched in sauce/marinade which did not taste great at all. We are well traveled individuals who indulge in restaurants often and pride ourselves in knowing well prepared food with quality ingredients. The manager's ability to accept feedback was dismal & immediately went on the defensive by providing excuses for the poor quality of food & service. Kudos to the server, Victor who kept up high spirits throughout. Do not believe what you see on the socials especially on...
Read moreVisited this little coffee shop twice over the course of a week long stay in Umhlanga. Each time the service was bright and friendly, being welcomed from the moment you stepped up. Covid protocols were observed with the table and chairs being wiped down with sanitiser before being seated. The coffee was great, enticing a second cup. Food was also good and we all enjoyed our meals. Definitely recommend a visit if you are staying in the area. On each of the occasions we visited most of the patrons seemed to be locals, always a good sign. Only downside is no view of the ocean, instead you are looking out on a...
