Babula Bar 1937 — Restaurant in Barcelona

I am from Barcelona and know a lot of good restaurants in my home town. I also travel a lot and live abroad, so I have lots of comparison points. Babula Bar was a complete disappointment in many ways. In fact, our dinner, which ended up costing over 100 euros per person, was a complete rip off. I have had dinners in the best tapas restaurants in the city for less than that.

That being said, I am ok with paying whatever if I am satisfied with the service and food. This was not the case. The service was plain awful. We had to beg for the servers to bring anything to the table, including water. In fact, our rule of thumb ended up being that we had to ask at least 3 times to 3 different servers for anyone to respond. We were left with empty glasses and dishes for over 30 minutes several times in our 2.5 hours in the restaurant. It was really bad.

The food was only ok. A couple of dishes were good. The ones I recommend are the "Esferas rellenas de tartar de salmón", the "Salmón marinado 24h", and the canalon. Everything else, including the famous beef tartar were just meh. Some dishes like the "Tabulé de bulgur" seemed taken out of a $10 menu. I have had much better at the Honest Greens chain salad bar. And the "Hojaldre invertido con foie mi cuit y anguila ahumada" and the "Bocaditos crujientes de tartar de gamba" were pretty bad.

The cocktails were pretty good. I have to give them that. If you are ok with waiting 30 minutes between ordering a cocktail and getting it served, this might be a place worth visiting for drinks.

The only thing that saves the place and makes me go all the way to the 2 star rating is the atmosphere. A lot of nice people and cool vibes. They even had some reasonable music at first until the playlist ended up devolving into awful pop covers. Also, I visited in August, which is a usually when lots of people in town take holidays. My husband and I first came to Babula Bar in 2021 while visiting Barcelona for the summer. The last night of our trip, we came here for dinner. That night we raved about how great our experience was - food and cocktails were EXCELLENT!

Skip to 2023: my husband and I decided to hold our wedding reception at Babula Bar! We loved the food, cocktails and overall vibe of the restaurant and knew our guests would appreciate the gastronomic experience that Babula Bar offers. Jimmy, the restaurant and special events manager, was so helpful during the planning process. He was willing to answer any questions we might have and very helpful with making suggestions for the menu. Additionally, the owner of the restaurant, Leo, took time to meet with my husband and give his input and ideas for the event and menu - which is not always common.

The food was beyond excellent - thanks Chef Andy! Many of the guests even said it was the best meal they had in Barcelona! Leo and Jimmy arranged for a ham cutter and oyster shucker to be present. And the staff...I have never seen a more attentive and friendly group! Someone was always around to offer me a tapa or drink. The staff truly made us feel like we were family.
