Euskal Etxea I think translates to “Basque House”. This space is a half bar, half social hub - classic tavern meets casual bar, serving delicious picar - this place had a buzz and I enjoyed my time here.
You grab a plate and join the line and help yourself to the toothpick-counted picar. It’s a vibrant but relaxed vibe, we grabbed a drink and some picar and stood at the back of the bar area and enjoyed what we tried.
I’m told they change the picars based on what they have and what is in season and are one of the good places to come because they change them over regularly so they aren’t sitting out all day.
There was a good mix of meats, seafood, cheese and vego options. This place seems focused on quality and fostering Euskadi–Catalunya cultural celebration through their food and the restaurant. I was only learning about these things on this visit, so am by no means an expert - but based on the recommendation and my experience I hope this is right.
Service is relaxed and efficient, it was one of the many times I wish I wasn’t reduced to smiling and pointing on this trip to Barcelona.
If you’ve been disappointed by other pintxos or tapas offerings elsewhere, head here, it was the benchmark for me on this trip and I enjoyed it.
There is honesty in the whole experience, including the food. A trust in the food and in the reliance on the counting of toothpicks to know what you’ve had, while eating and drinking in a friendly and slightly hectic environment.
This place feels like the kind of place locals know to come, and is exactly where you should head if you want to leave the tourist traps behind and eat some simple, honest,...
Read moreWe were on Monday with a group of friends at a table near the bar. Let's have some tapas that tasted good and enjoy midday in this place on the streets of Barcelona. Although we had "no problem or so I think" I am not sure about the price of the menu. During our stay at the establishment, since I am bilingual, I observed a scam in the price of something that a man at the establishment was taking. One of the waitresses charged €4 for a simple glass of what I think is beer and yet they charged us and other customers €2.20. Although our experience was good, I doubt the price because when it changed depending on the person, I really believe that they scammed a person in front of us and it makes me wonder if they scammed us too. We will not return to the premises due to the risk of being scammed. I write this review because it makes me feel bad to see how the man left dissatisfied, having a drink alone and leaving displeased. The way they spoke seemed Spanish since I know the language well but I could still see how they charged an extra price and it makes me wonder if we or other clients who do not know the language well could take advantage and make an extra cost of products with a specific price on the menu. Thinking about what happened at night, I do not recommend this place despite believing that they did not overcharge us, but observing that someone else did. In London the price is the same for everyone and it makes me distrust this place, which is why I rate it...
Read moreWe opted to sit for dinner with a menu rather than stand at the tapas bar. Our waiter handed us a menu and then stood there practically demanding our order. We asked his favorites and he replied the carne. He couldn't elucidate further. We ordered and he left. Having been a server, I'm not familiar with any shift ending 2hrs before closing. It was hard to tell who he actually was but whoever served us clearly had no idea what he was doing. The tapas bar staff crowded around to covertly watch him. He was nice enough... As "recommended," we ordered the beef at around 25euros. It was somewhat minced, barely cooked, mostly fat, steak. I literally wretched trying to politely choke it down. The only spice was what seemed more like someone spilled coarse sea salt over the entirety of the meat. We were not demanding or self-righteous. I spoke Spanish to the staff, admittedly not perfectly. Numerous American 20-somethings crowded the tapas bar. We cannot think of any way in which we insulted the male staff here but we felt like a monumental pain in the ass based on the cold attitude we received- not to mention the outlandish price for very sub-par food. The female staff was more friendly and seemed embarrassed by our treatment. They left the tapas bar when they could to show us small kindness. Perhaps the tapas bar is nearly a 5 star experience. The menu dining barely...
