We actually stopped here so my wife could use the bathroom. But when we do that we always order a couple of drinks. I ordered Tinto de Verano and my wife ordered Claro. The first drink is red wine with a clear sparkling beverage. It can be English lemonade, sprite, 7-Up, or with the Spaniards use: Casera. The tinto had a bit of a spice to it. It wasn’t better or worse than any other that I’ve had in Spain, it was just different. I enjoyed it. Claro is half beer and have cloudy lemonade. I can’t stand beer. I liken it to cold urine. But this combination was really good. It made beer drinkable for me. We ordered papas bravad, which is Fried potatoes with the sauce on it. We didn’t care for their version of the sauce and when we told the server, they brought us something else to try. Best thing that ever happened. We tried papas arrugadas or Canarias: Little round baked potatoes in salt that were absolutely amazing. I also watched the server who is also the bartender, prepare the tray for a table of seven. His attention to detail was amazing. The service was excellent and the food we tried was very good. I just watch the manager checker plate that the server gone from the kitchen and she said that the plane was not right and had it sent back to be fixed. That is impressive. That is the kind of service you were looking for. Read moreWhat an amazing little jewel hidden in Madrid!
We originally had other plans, but by a series of coincidences, we ended up at this cozy little establishment tucked beyond the bustle of the streets.
The food was unique and delicious (caramelized salad, Ropa Vieja, and a specialty cod), and the price was great for this part of town (€84 for 4 dishes and 4 drinks). Service was exceptional, even without tipping (again, we were trying to save on money), and we were even treated to some shots of... well, I'm not sure what it was, but it was delicious and 100% free (I don't think they do this for everyone though...).
The location is also great. As I mentioned, the restaurant itself is away from the main streets of town and is inaccessible by car. While it might be an inconvenience at first, it provides for a calm and relaxing dinner in the (mostly) quiet side streets of Madrid. There's also a nice square just beside the location. For us, it was really a nice break from the hustle of tourist filled attractions.
In all, I would definitely recommend this establishment for anyone looking for good food, competitive prices, and quiet dining (or as quiet as you can get in central...
Read moreHad lunch with a friend (we book a table through their website). The papas arrugadas are regular potatoes not the canarian potato with thick skin that is needed for them to wrinkle properly, but were nicely done and came with 2 mojos. The red one was not spicy. The carne fiesta was just like in the islands, and a safe order if you are coming with kids, this is always a children favorite. We also ordered conejo en salmorejo which was rather sweet from the figs, and I never tried that in the islands but it was nice to have coneno in madrid. If you are drinking wine by the glass they only have two reds (not from the islands) and two whites (one from the islands, Flor de Chasna). I would have liked to have more options, in particular more typical options for drinks but also for dishes, and the service was rather slow in a busy weekend mid-day....
