I’ve been to La Malquerida twice since arriving in Toledo, and honestly, it’s become my absolute favorite spot in the city. Despite its name — which translates to “The Unloved Woman”, a poetic reference to an old Spanish play — everything about this place is the opposite of unloved. It’s full of warmth, flavor, and personality.
From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is vibrant and inviting. The decor is colorful, eclectic, and full of charm — rustic textures, unique art on the walls, soft lighting — it feels like a cozy local gem with a distinct soul. You can tell this isn’t just another restaurant; it’s a place with a story.
The staff are wonderful — incredibly friendly, patient, and welcoming, especially to someone like me who isn’t a native Spanish speaker. Their kindness really elevates the whole experience and makes you feel right at home.
One of my favorite touches: every table is welcomed with chips and a complimentary small starter bite — a different one each visit! It’s such a lovely surprise, and both times, the bites were full of flavor and beautifully presented. It’s those small details that make a big impression.
As for the food — wow.
The Salmon Bread was outstanding. An open-faced toast layered with beautifully seasoned salmon, bold flavors, and just the right amount of herbs and seasoning. It’s savory, fresh, and full of depth. Visually, it’s just as impressive — vibrant, colorful, and plated with care.
Manchego Crumbs (Migas de Manchego) — a traditional local dish, and it’s absolutely delicious here. The texture is crumbly yet soft, infused with the rich, nutty essence of Manchego cheese. It’s rustic comfort food done right — flavorful, earthy, and authentic.
Satay Chicken was another highlight. Tender, juicy skewers with a flavorful, aromatic satay sauce. It’s creamy, nutty, and perfectly spiced, making each bite satisfying and fresh. The presentation was clean and appetizing — simple yet elegant.
And of course, I’ve completely fallen in love with sangria since being in Spain, and the one here might just be my favorite so far. It’s refreshing, fruity, and perfectly balanced — I honestly don’t think I’ll ever get...
Read moreThis review is more about our experiences (plural) that involved drinks in La Malquerida, rather than food.
While the bar looks really cool and appealing on the outside, I feel like it's too chaotic on the inside for someone to properly enjoy their stay there. The mismatched decor certainly would work for some, but the main issue is the incredibly loud volume of music, which is too loud for conversations and you just end up shouting the entire time.
As for the drinks, the quality leaves much to be desired. We went there twice, the first time we ordered the Mai Tai (which tasted like pure alcohol with zero flavor), the frozen lemon daiquiri (which just tasted like sour and unappetizing lemons, no sweetness or texture to it) and the one that sounds like a Ukrainian name (again, tasted like pure vodka). The second time, we played it safe with copas and beers, but my friend also tried their papaya smoothie which had the wrong texture for a smoothie, too watery and tasting like lightly flavored iced water.
For a bar such as this one, the quality of their cocktails and smoothies is frankly unacceptable, given at how highly they're priced for what you...
Read moreWhat a shame! Sat down at the bar for a couple of beers with my wife. Didn't take a table for eating customers, we're considerate like that. As we were googling the selection of beers on offer, another women was served a drink at the bar next to us.
When it came time to order, I ordered two beers in Spanish, which resulted in a long reply in Spanish and then being ignored for around 10 minutes while she, the waitress, through bottles in bins and glasses in dishwashers, all the time ignoring us. I sensed she was not happy with something, and the noise from the bar was a sort of demonstration to the fact; but I might be wrong and this might be her normal friendly attitude in the service industry.
We eventually left, thirsty and ignored. I was very embarrassed and angry.
I'm in toledo for few more days if the management wish to contact me by replying to...
