Tucked away on a quiet side street near Torrevieja’s iconic water fountain, Khon Kaen Thai might not catch your eye at first glance. But step inside - or better yet, grab a table on their charming roadside terrace - and you’ll quickly realise why this place has become our go-to for authentic Thai flavours.
The restaurant itself is simple but inviting, with traditional Thai décor, no-frills wooden furniture, and a long bar that stretches across the room. It’s cozy, unpretentious, and exactly what you’d hope for from a family-run spot. But let’s be honest - we’re not here for the interior design.
What keeps us coming back, time and time again, are two irresistible things:
The food – Consistently delicious, freshly prepared, and bursting with authentic Thai flavours. Unlike some restaurants that tone down their spices for European palates, Khon Kaen Thai isn’t afraid to bring the heat (though they’ll adjust it if you ask nicely).
Every dish we’ve tried has been cooked to perfection, with vibrant herbs, crisp vegetables, and just the right balance of sweet, sour, and spicy.
The staff – Warm, welcoming, and genuinely lovely. They greet us like old friends every time we visit, remembering our preferences with a smile. That kind of hospitality is rare, and it makes every meal here feel special.
Our latest visit. As good as ever. We ordered the Pad See Ew Chicken with Rice (rich, smoky, and packed with tender chicken), the Fried Chicken (crispy on the outside, juicy inside), and two servings of Pad Krapao Chicken with Rice (fiery, fragrant, and impossible to resist). Washed down with two ice-cold beers and a Coke, the bill came to a very fair €74.30 - excellent value for such high-quality food.
If you’re craving real Thai cuisine in Torrevieja, skip the tourist traps and head straight to Khon Kaen Thai. Five stars without hesitation - for the incredible food, the unbeatable service, and the kind of place that just feels like home.
We’ll be back....
Read moreWe visited this restaurant on Saturday evening, Paulina our waitress was friendly and efficient, the menu was easy to understand by 2 people who aren’t familiar with Thai food. We started with some crispy spring rolls, pork skewers and a papaya salad. Everything was delicious and piping hot. Our 2 main dishes were spicy and delicious, I picked prawns and they came with a spicy sauce, veggies and noodles, my husband chose beef and his was in a delicious coconut curry sauce, it was served with boiled rice! This was actually my favourite dish of the evening. We ordered a bottle of Rioja that was enjoyed by both of us. The staff and owner were all very friendly and chatted to us, they even taught us a few words of Thai! A very pleasant experience, the only minus was that for a restaurant in the centre of Torrevieja it closed very early! They didn’t rush us but I would have liked to have lingered a while longer. We arrived at 8.30 and were out at 10.10. It wasn’t too much of a problem because we moved on and enjoyed some cocktails in the nearby bars. I would definitely go back again and try some more...
Read moreWe ate lunch here today, a nasty, windy day with Saharan sand in the air. We were given the choice of inside or out for our reserved table and chose inside. There weren’t many diners there but I suspect many had visited yesterday as the owners were offering a 15% discount for Sweden’s National Day.
The menu was varied offering many styles of Thai meals with your choice of protein. You can vary the ‘heat’ level of the spices if you want to so don’t be afraid of it blowing your head off.
The meals we ordered were well presented, fresh and delicious. We were so busy chatting we didn’t think to take photos though.
Service was quick and efficient, offering explanations of the food if we needed any.
All in all, an excellent lunch and well worth the visit. I’m sure we’ll be back again...
