Ceylon Curry club seemed to be a popular choice for foreigners to sample Sri Lankan food. There were quite a few of them on the day and there were also large groups, celebrating bdays etc. The welcome drink was a sweet cinnamon tea in cute little cups, brought to you as you take your seats. There is a great selection of cocktails. Many of them with arrack or local rum. All the cocktails we tried were good. And presentation was good too. We ordered the Manioc cutlets and hot butter cuttlefish as starters and they were both good. I would have liked a little more flavour in the cutlets. It looked like there was just boiled manioc when you cut into them. The fried garlic that came with it was a nice touch. The hot butter cuttlefish fish was good too. Very tender and perfectly cooked.
The hoppers came as a set and had a selection of toppings. We only wanted egg hoppers and the server told us we couldn’t get them as single hoppers initially. But when he finished taking our order he asked if we want egg hoppers. And we were all confused. He finally did get us the single egg hoppers but there was some weird miscommunication that happened. Point to note, if you do order the hoppers, they come to your table with a cart, and make the hoppers at your table. And the presentation itself is very creative.
The mutton kottu was good. There were generous bits of mutton in it. We also ordered the pol roti which looked totally different to what was in the menu. The roti could have been better. They were really thin and almost like a crispy biscuit. It came with a lunumiris, seeni sambol and dhal curry. The prawn curry was ok. The gravy was flavourful and went well with both the roti and the kottu.
There was a little contraption they used to bring the food out and we couldn’t help but notice all the smoke it was giving out and it got a little unbearable at one point.
The real stars of the dinner were the desserts. The curd and treacle came in a little scale contraption and was so light and smooth. I wonder if it’s made in house. The coconut crème brûlée, baked curd, and jaggery pudding were all exceptionally good. Well done on the desserts.
The initial server seemed a little lost but the person who attended to us after was excellent. He was nice enough to ask if we could finish all the desserts we had ordered because they were generous portions. Which we did because they were so good. And he also told us about the various ongoing card promotions.
All in all it was a good experience. The presentation of all the meals were creative and visually interesting. The ambiance is lovely. Would go again but probably for a special occasion due to it being a bit on the pricey side for just a spur of the...
Read moreOn our first night in Sri Lanka we were originally intending to go to the Ministry of Crab next door, but were put off by the eye watering price in dollars. We were lucky that night to grab a table at The Ceylon Curry Club as it was a memorable experience. The setting in an old Dutch hospital was lovely and the service, from friendly professional staff was exceptional. But my word, the food!! I was talking to my wife as i tasted the calamari starter and had to stop and enjoy. We are very well travelled as a couple but also work allows me to travel a lot and stay and eat in some top end establishments. Not one has had the effect of stopping me in my tracks like that. Quite simply the best calamari I’d ever had. Spicy and hot, it was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. The other starter my wife and I shared, Tempura Prawns was equally delicious. Served with a mango dip on top of spiced pineapple cut finely, it was again a wonderful merger of spice and sweet and clearly high quality and very fresh prawns. All of a sudden this restaurant perked my interest and the prawn curry with Roti and its super tasty side dishes of Dhal, onion chutney and something hot that I didn’t catch the name of just elevated this delight even further. The food was amazing, every single bite. It was so good that after 3 weeks of traveling and enjoying some superb food, on our last night, we went back. We booked a table to avoid disappointment and as it was very busy, I would recommend doing that. DO NOT MISS THIS RESTAURANT IF YOU ARE IN COLOMBO…. Everything is perfect, the manager was so welcoming and friendly, making me feel like a regular. Our waiter was excellent and advised us throughout the experience and the chef as well as the manager made time to speak to us on a very busy night for them. Shout out to the young lad who was in his first few weeks of working. He couldn’t have been more charming and clearly enthused by working there. That speaks volumes to the kind of place it is… and the price. A full 3 course meal with wine was a tadge over £50 for two… exceptional value for money… one of the best meals ever, let alone in Sri Lanka where we were constantly given incredible food. Go there, you will not regret...
Read moreWe had the absolute pleasure of dining at Ceylon Curry Club and I can confidently say it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had in Sri Lanka. From the moment we walked in everything from the food to the service to the atmosphere exceeded our expectations.
Let’s start with the food. truly incredible.. Full of rich, authentic Sri Lankan flavors that instantly reminded us of a delicious home cooked meal. Every dish was cooked to perfection well balanced, perfectly spiced, and beautifully presented. We asked for a large portion, but what we got was even more generous than expected. You really get great value for money, and you won’t leave hungry ^_^
The pricing was also surprisingly reasonable, especially considering the portion size and the location. It’s hard to find that perfect balance between affordability and quality, but this place nailed it. We had no issues at all with the bill everything was clear, and no hidden charges or confusion like in some other places.
The service was one of the highlights of our experience. Every member of the staff was kind, respectful, and welcoming. A special shoutout to Sampath, who served us with such warmth and professionalism. He had great knowledge about the dishes, gave helpful recommendations, and made sure we were comfortable from start to finish. It’s rare to find such friendly and genuinely caring staff they really made us feel at home.
The atmosphere was just as wonderful. Located inside the charming Dutch Hospital complex, the restaurant itself was clean, cozy, and beautifully maintained. The indoor seating was peaceful and comfortable, ideal for everything from a casual lunch to a special dinner with friends or family. The overall vibe was classy but relaxed a perfect place to unwind and enjoy great food.
All in all, Ceylon Curry Club gave us a five star experience that we will never forget. Whether you're a local looking for great food or a tourist wanting to try authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, this place is a must visit. Delicious food, generous portions, fair pricing, and exceptional service what more could you ask for???
Highly, highly recommend this gem in Colombo. We’ll definitely...
