Smöriga bröd — Restaurant in Göteborgs Stad

I visited specifically to try the Reuben sandwich. It was okay, but ultimately fell short of my expectations. On the positive side, the prices are reasonable, and a single sandwich could easily serve as a full meal for many. The bread was nice (interestingly, and not surprisingly, it was much better than what you’d typically get in NYC), but the meat didn’t quite match the US experience. If my memory serves me right, the meat is supposed to be pastrami, but it tasted more like corned beef, lacking the smoky, woody, and spicy flavors I expected. Overall, the sandwich was slightly too salty. The Russian dressing and sauerkraut didn’t have a discernible flavor, so they didn’t contribute much to the overall taste. Lastly, a basil leaf was added, which altered the flavor with its distinct taste and didn’t belong in the sandwich.

The place itself isn’t shabby, but it doesn’t quite have a formal restaurant atmosphere either. There were racing bicycles, like Pinarellos, on wall stands as part of the décor.

The beers could definitely be served colder.

I really wanted to like this place and we were off to a good start, friendly staff and nice looking sandwiches on the other tables. Unfortunately, after our order was taken, we waited and waited and waited. The server came and said, the kitchen was under high pressure. Then a group that came and ordered after us got a little treat from the kitchen and then they got food while we got nothing. My partner went up to check himself (after the server had said she would check but didn’t return) and it turned out the other group got our order and there was nothing else bring prepared at that moment. I can not express how frustrated and angry I felt at that moment at the same time as I had to explain to my two very sad and very hungry kids that they would not get any cheese sandwich that they had been waiting for so patiently.
