Read moreThis restaurant has replaced Küühl, which used to serve traditional dishes from Switzerland and Alsace. Hans im Glück has retained the chic ambience but now serves burgers and a few salads. As the name suggests, there is a bar, but good luck getting to it; it's lined with high tables for two to dine. Drinks are really only for guests seated in the restaurant or outside, ordered via the wait staff.
The burgers don't impress. There is a choice of two types of bun: wholegrain or sourdough (or no bun at all). The patty comes as it comes; no option to have it rare, for example. There are vegan and vegetarian options. The burgers themselves are extremely plain and simple; they contain exactly what it says on the menu, plus one leaf of misplaced lettuce. Cheese and bacon? You get the beef patty, cheese, bacon, and lettuce, in the bun of your choice; that's it. A very small number of extras is available at a not inconsequential extra cost. There are some interesting variations, such as camembert and cranberries, but again, nothing else in the burger. Four types of sauce are provided on the table (orange mustard, ketchup, barbecue, mayonnaise).
The restaurant offers a few salads; nothing special and not very substantial. Bizarrely, the green salad we ordered was served in a hot bowl.
Hans im Glück offers menu deals; for dinner, this comprises a burger, side (fries or salad) and a cocktail for the price of the burger plus CHF 15. This works out to a saving of CHF 5.50—but (very unfairly), the price is not discounted for non-alcoholic cocktails, leaving a princely saving of just CHF 1 in that case.
The restaurant was very busy when we visited on a wet Tuesday night, but I suspect this is mostly due to curiosity in these early days. The décor is great, the burgers are average at best, and the food and drinks are overpriced (even with the menu option, it works out to more than CHF 30 per head for a simple burger meal and weak (or...
Read moreThe burgers are good, but they do not have anything for small children except potato fries. We found that out during our first visit where my 3 year old ended up having only fries for dinner. So today, I decided to get chicken nuggets along that my son could have while we enjoy our burgers. We ordered our meals & drinks (including a drink for my son), and asked the hostess first if I could feed my son. She politely mentioned that outside food is not allowed, but understanding that there is nothing in the menu that he could have, she was empathetic and said we could be discreet. However right after that, the restaurant manager came and very impolitely snapped at us that picnicking was not allowed (maybe some racial discrimination as we are foreigners?). After explaining to her the context, she still insisted that we comply or else we would need to leave. Very sadly, my son and I stepped out of the restaurant where I could feed him his food on the street before coming back to the restaurant to eat what I had ordered.
So my suggestions: Learn how to treat your customers properly, with respect. Be empathetic. Your rules regarding picnicking respectfully should apply, but exceptions for small children should be there. If colouring pads and pencils are available at your restaurant for the little children, then even have some basic kids favorites in your menu apart from potato fries that...
