tibits — Restaurant in Basel

I have been walking by this place during our stay here and as my family doesn't eat veggies like I do, they walked in here with me to check it out. The food bar looked great, though not all set up even 45 minutes after opened. We ordered a smoothie for my little sons and waited on the stools by the window (not even taking up any of the tables ) for the restaurant next door to open in 10 minutes so they could go eat a proper hot breakfast with eggs and I could stay at Tibits. No sooner had we opened the mango bottle that someone very politely came over and told us we could not stay because the mango smoothie was a togo item and not expensive enough to stay. With two little ones in tow, we ushered ourselves out into the rain and Union Diner let us in 10 minutes early. I guess I will just have pancakes over here then. In all our many years living in Europe, NEVER has a restaurant kicked us out with kids after we purchased an item from them. The restaurant had ONE customer in it at the time. I am looking over there now and no one has entered since we left 20 minutes...

The presentation was very noble and the restaurant is modern and clean. A large choice in the variety of food was available such as salads, hummus, bulgur, rice, noodles, tofu dishes, spring rolls, jalapenos cheese in batter, guacamole, desserts. The staff were friendly but there is no table service. Generally the food was completely bland and tasted like canteen food: specially prepared so everyone can eat it without complaints because of spiciness and saltiness. The food is also extremely expensive and is measured per weight of the plate. For a normal portion i payed Sfr. 32.- and I wasn't full with a beer that costed Sfr. 8.90.-. If you are an organic food person I have to say only some of the foods such as eggs, milk and wheat were organic. The food is delicious, however the staff is quite rude. I purchased a large meal, bought two drinks and was yelled at for taking a sip of water from a bottle I had with me when all of my drinks were out. The place is very expensive, and I purchased a substantial amount - it was not nice to be reprimanded. I recommend taking your food to go if you can as you will be treated better elsewhere. Edit: In regards to the management response, your employees in general are rude and smug. She could have asked me politely - I took one sip and put it back in my purse.
